Edit: Now, the only concern about airframes is the number in the pool vs. the number in air units (*10).

I am 99% sure that this is true. Also to scrap planes you need to have more than 99 in pool.
So if you have 70 planes they will be never scraped even if you do not have units using them

Mke is concerned about not having planes go to scrap (for one resource each) that he is trying to bank for late game kami's. Ideally, all of those Val's and Kate's you start with, you want to be able to keep. Its several hundred planes each depending upon losses.

The Oi had made excellent time and was the first ship of the newly designated task force to arrive at Amami Oshima. Captain Nobue Morishita watched as his bridge crew called out orders for docking procedures. Everything was crisp and professional, just as things should be.

As soon as the Oi had completed its docking, a rating scrambled aboard with a letter for Captain Morishita personally penned by his good friend Kyuji Kubo. The letter contained orders to make all possible haste in heading to Takao, Formosa, there to take command of the CL Nagara of Cruiser Division 16 of the Third Fleet and serving as the flagship of Admiral Kyuji Kubo’s 4th Surprise Attack Unit. A Captain Hankyu Sasaki would be taking command of the Oi and was either already at Amami Oshima or en route.

Nobue paused after reading his orders to contemplate the sudden change of command. Obviously there had been some last minute changes what with the newly formed Suzume Bachi task force and now the sudden need to make changes in the command structure of Cruiser Division 16. That Kyuji considered this change critical and that he was using his rank to bring in Nobue in was apparent as Nobue read between the lines of the letter in his hands.

Well, it would be good to see his old friend again, and with the start of war with America already under way it would be good to serve with officers he knew rather than serving within a hastily formed strike force that would be trying this new concept of torpedo cruisers in combat. Captain Morishita had always had concerns over the new armament his Oi had received. Having 40 torpedoes in mounts above deck during a naval engagement would add a severe pucker-factor to the combat. He had woke up several times in a sweat while dreaming of his ship taking a direct hit from an enemy salvo in one of those ten torpedo mounts. One of the first areas of training he’d extensively implemented was damage control and the immediate suppression of fire anywhere along the flanks of the Oi where those torpedo mounts had been emplaced. Nobue paused in thought to look down again at his orders. Well, any future problems with those torpedo mounts were now the headache of one Captain Hankyu Sasaki.

Captain Hankyu Sasaki climbed limberly out from the side hatch of the H6K2-L Ayanami that had finally taxied in and docked after a sea-landed near the port of Amami Oshima. The smaller dock was used for loading and unloading float aircraft like the huge transport version of the long-ranged H6K2 patrol aircraft. The night before, Hanakyu had just missed catching the mail flight for Amami Oshima from Nagasaki, and in truth considered it great fortune to have managed to cage a ride on a supply run to the isle that had left earlier this morning.
Hankyu took a moment and ran his hand through thick dark hair cropped short as was the fashion of men serving in Japan’s Imperial Navy before replacing the cap on his head. A crewman of the Flying Boat popped his head out of the side hatch and with a quick nod after getting the Captain’s attention, tossed Hankyu the two duffel bags he had brought with him. Hanakyu surveyed his surroundings and quickly spied the silhouette of a light cruiser docked on the other side of the small bay. Since it was the only naval ship in port, Hankyu decided to make it his destination. And fortune continued to shine on his path as he noted a large cargo truck that was just coming to rest near the base of where the dock met the shore line. Hankyu meandered jauntily down the dock towards the waiting truck, secure in the knowledge that his insignia would bear up to the task of having the supply truck take him to his new home.

Back on the Oi, Captain Nobue Morishita was in his cabin giving it a final check after having packed his life’s trappings into three large bags when one of his crew knocked politely at his cabin door and shared with him that a naval officer had arrived and was seeking an audience with the Captain of the Oi. Nobue gave a quick nod of acceptance and then told the sailor to carry his bags down to the dock and secure transportation to the headquarters building so he could begin to arrange passage to Takao after meeting this new officer.

Nobue made his way up to the deck on the port side to which the Oi was tied up to the dock. He easily spotted the newly arrived officer and made his way towards him. While they made introductions Nobue was surprised at how young this new Captain Sasaki appeared to be. Nobue was already well on the north side of 50 and had the silver frost to prove it. But this young skamp was easily in his mid 30ies. Politics must have played into this younger man’s career, Nobue thought grumpily to himself, deciding quickly to treat the younger man with a little more respect then was his due.
Nobue introduced Hankyo to the ship’s officers and then personally gave Hankyu a quick tour of the Oi, taking time near the torpedo mounts the Oi had just recently received to gauge the younger captain’s reaction to all of that ordinance sitting above deck an easy target enemy aircraft, let alone a 5” shell from a naval destroyer.
If the torpedo mounts bothered the younger captain he never so much as twitched. In fact he had almost seemed to gain a gleam in his eyes when he discovered that the Oi could fire two broadsides of twenty torpedoes each!
Returning to the port side for his final leave, Nobue said his goodbyes to the ship’s officers and then disembarked without a single backward glance. Such was the way of the Japanese Navy he had devoted just over forty years of his life to.

Captain Hankyu Sasaki watched the stiff-backed older captain climb into a car reserved for officer transportation and continued to watch as the car drove away. Although Captain Mirishita had made mention that he was to assume command of the light cruiser Nagara that was currently at Takao, Formosa, Hankyu had made no mention that he’d just left that ship the day before, and that Mirishita would be replacing him as the captain of the Nagara.

Hankyu had run afoul of one Admiral Kyuji Kubo of Cruiser Division 16. Hankyu considered Admiral Kubo a pain-in-the-assed old-school officer that masked incompetence in the stiff-necked mannerisms of honor and pride that had been a part of Japanese naval tradition for almost fifty years. Hankyu had come up from the submariner side of the navy, having spent fifteen years as a submariner prior to joining the surface side of Japan’s navy. Hankyu knew that there had always been friction between the submariners and the surface fleet. Not quite as bad as the friction between naval personnel and the army, true, but definitely contention that often broke into fisticuffs when alcohol was added into the mix. But Admiral Kubo took good care of his prejudices and vices, and once the Admiral had found out Hankyu’s past life as a submariner their relationship had immediately dropped off the chart.

No, thought Hankyu to himself as he watched the car disappear from view, “Kudranai” Kubo had tried to dry-dock Hankyu but had only managed to swap commanding officers between two light cruisers. And with the improved armament the Oi was now sporting, Hankyu was looking forward to showing these surface-fleeters what submariners had known as soon as the Long Lance had become available, that Neptune himself would have traded in his trident for a full spread of Type 93 Torpedoes!

What is all of this stuff in the updateReport.txt file? These are all upgrades to units on the board? I don't recall seeing anything like this when I played against Nemo in AE. Is this all ok or do I have a problem with the game?

So KB did not fly any air groups this turn. Since it was in easy range of Pearl I must assume KB ran into weather? KB will try one last time @ PH and then head west.

I've got a lot of SCTFs running after merchies. I've got a lot of search aircraft out and can see a lot of his mearchie TFs.

I asked to use the Thai troops in Burma/Malaya but Chris doesn't like the idea. No biggie. If I didn't ask then the answer was no anyways... [8|]

the 65th Bde is loading for Vigan.

Troops in China are moving about to form an upper & lower attack front. Smaller units are scurrying about as I try to free up larger combat units that are kind of stuck with Garrison duties.

Production seems to be going well so far. I'm getting TFs of merchies to ports where resources are accumulating.

Amphibious TFs are steaming for ports along northern Borneo.

Hong Kong should fall within the next two turns.

Next turn I should have Vigan and Aparri (neither are defended)

Kavieng will be hit next turn. I see an enemy TF @ Rabaul. I've got a the Ryujo down there so we'll see how things fair.

TF5 is SE of Singapore and making a run into the Java Sea. 2BB, 2CA, 1CL, & 6DD.

Agreed, if he is. My thought is that he is too good to do that. I'd be watching out for a "Fortress Palembang" type op somewhere else. Keep your recon and pickets moving outward fast and see if you can pick up any activity at the edges. But, yes, you have to keep up the expansion pace until you find out where he has drawn the line. I don't think there is any other real option for the IJ player.

I've got Mavis flying from Kotas Bharu to scope out Palembang. My hope is to get my 3 para-units to Kuching or Sinkawang and drop in on Palembang. I was hoping for speed on this operation but I don'tthink I'll achieve the time frame I was hoping for. I want to capture the NW tip of Borneo and shut down Singapore Air Ops B4 I try pushing an Amphibious invasion through to capture Palembang base.

TF Suzume Bachi was about 850 miles east of Legaspi and making good speed for their jump-off point into battle against the British and American forces, the Isle of Babeldaob. Orders were to refuel and then proceed east into the Celebes Sea to engage targets of opportunity.

Commander Keto Tokunaga of the Torpedo Boat Hato tried to keep a stoic face but he was young for his rank and probably just as excited as any of the rest of his crew to have such an opportunity to face the enemy. The Hato was 960 tons of lean, mean, fighting machine, with a complement of 129 ratings and officers. Twin shafts pushed by Kampon water tube boilers and impulse turbines pushed the smaller ship along at an impressive 30 knots. Armed with three torpedo mounts of three tubes each, three 12cm/45 guns, and a pair of Depth Charge Launchers, the nimble Hato was the ultimate wasp in the small swarm of this task force.

There was something about smaller warships that brought forth a bit of a strut in a keel-member’s walk. No one wanted to be on the receiving end of anything greater than a 20mm shell but at the same time, the Hato had some teeth! They were kind of like an egg shell armed with a sledge hammer, thought Commander Tokunaga to himself as he allowed the Hato to slowly fall back along the port flank of the Mayo and the two Torpedo Cruisers that trailed behind.

Keto paused for a moment and looked again at the flank of one of those Torpedo Cruisers. Both the Oi & the Katakami sported five 4-tube mounts along each side and each ship could launch a single broadside of twenty torpedoes! In his mind’s eye Keto could picture the Suzume Bachi launching their Long Lance torpedoes on an unsuspecting group of enemy warships on a moonless night. They would be like assassins – striking from the depths of darkness at the heart of their prey! Childhood stories flitted at the back of his mind and he almost grinned to himself.

Crewmembers bristled the superstructure looking for enemy periscopes or the large lumbering American search planes they called PBYs. The war was only six days old and everyone wanted to be a part of it.

The sky was blue with a mottle of clouds, and there was a slight breeze from the east. Having slid far back past the last of the Torpedo Cruisers, the mighty Hato surged forth again towards the front of the task force while performing their mission of patrolling one flank of their task force.

Keto could hardly wait for some real action.

Are you seriously considering trying for PH? Someone tried doing that in an early AE game (I forget who), but despite having a huge advantage in troops he was getting horrible adjusted AVs when attacking......don't know if it will be possible against a veteran like CT. Good luck anyway, should be an entertaining read!
