That reminds me of Zulu. Two daughters were dismayed by the movie's portrayal of their father, who I think is the character portrayed as the miscreant drunk. (At least he wasn't the preacher!)

I seem to be the only fan of 'Apocalypse Now' so far.....I'm a bit suprised[X(]

It's OK, but IMO overlong for what it is. It feels like it plods between (some very good) action sequences. I dunno why I feel like that, Das Boot isn't exactly short or action packed from end to end either.

On the subject of Das Boot, perhaps the film's biggest critic was the former Kriegsmarine correspondent who wrote the novel it was based on. Lothar-Gunther Buchheim had a big falling out with the director, Wolfgang Petersen. Uttering concerns about the end result, Buchheim felt that unlike his clearly anti-war novel the adaptation was "another re-glorification and re-mystification" of the German World War II U-boat war, German heroism and nationalism. He called the film a cross between a "cheap, shallow American action flick" and a "contemporary German propaganda newsreel from World War II".

Buchheim was by all accounts a bit touchy too. [;)]

The ending was cheesy. But as i've oft mentioned, the movie is worth a peek just for the ASW scene. It really is that good. I ended up with a sore jaw after seeing it. Near the end I was thinking (along with the actors portraying the crew) "will this ever end??!!!"

No politics....no mishmash. Just a terrifyingly real picture of what it must have been like for any sub crew in WWII. I still can't enter a memorial WWII sub boat and not be amazed that men actually lived and fought inside those small metal tubes. I'm slightly claustrophobic and i'm not a big fan of death by drowning either. It took one hell of a mindset that no set of "percs" described in return for signing up could compensate.

Havn't seen Zulu since i was a wee geek. But i agree......it was a great movie.

Platoon, Hamburger Hill, and Apocalypse Now are all quite watchable films that haven't yet been mentioned.

I thought The Bridge (Die Brucke) was overwraught. Interesting for the character development, but comparatively poor in other respects.

Catch 22was a very enjoyable film-but not a typical war movie. Still quite watchable.

@chickenboy: I watched "Die Brücke" when I was... I don't really remember.. I remember my parents were out for the evening and I enjoyed to be able to stay up late and watch TV... so I must have been very young. It left a deep impression. Maybe I should watch it again

Dambusters is another great film [&o] P.. Popsy

Bridges of Toko Ri, and Pork Chop Hill were memorable.

Anyone see Front Line (a Korean made movie that debuted in 2010)?

Just saw that for the first time a couple of months ago. Great movie.

Surprised no one has mentioned The Longest Day yet. I thought that a very good war film.

Midway was good, I thought. It would have been better without the unnecessary Japanese sweetheart love interest sidelight, but still watchable.

@warspite1: is dambusters the movie about Operation Chastise? truly another gem if it is.

Where Eagles Dare was well done. Also, The Great Escape was flawless as a major motion picture. The Pianist faithfully portrayed the brutality and struggle to survive in WWII Poland.

Who can forget the ending of the mini-series "Masada" One of the best lines in movie history by Peter 0' Toole as the "victorious" Lucius Flavius Silva;

"What victory!? We have won a rock on the shore of the poisoned sea...."

I'm coming late to the party, but one film not mentioned yet that I really enjoyed, and is probably in my top 10, is "The Train" with Burt Lancaster.

"From here to Eternity" is also up there, another Burt Lancaster film. (Man crush?)

I also give thumbs up for many of the films already mentioned. Waterloo and Zulu are two of my favourites as well. I just love the uniforms of the Napoleonic era.

Another film, perhaps not a war movie in the traditional sense, is "Seven Days in May" with Kirk Douglas and, oh man, Burt Lancaster (this is getting scary!). [:D]

I just watched "Das Boot" again, which in my opinion is simply the best movie about naval warfare (nevermind it's only about subs). It's a shame that the english dubbing is in no way up to the german original though.
Are there any movies like it out there? (without the overdone heroism crap, action scenes that no one really needed except the box office, ... you get my point)

Btw when did the Americans forget how to make really A-class movies? I mean just look at it there is "the longest day", "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and the likes of the old days and then theres stuff like the movie which in this forum I'm not allowed to name (which is a good thing. It doesn't deserve a name)

I don't know how you could say that, Pirates of the Caribbean is clearly the best naval warfare movie and it's American made. [:D]

It doesn't quite fit the "war flick" genre. That might be why.

This said, the best war stories tend to be books, in my opinion. There is something in war diaries that movies never seem to get right.

If you liked Apocalypse now, you need to read the short story that inspired it: Heart of Darkness, by Conrad. As for diaries, I believe you've read Junger"s war diary (Storm of Steel in english), this is one of the best. In the opposite trench, you'll have Genevoix and Drieu la Rochelle.

I watched "Das Boot" both in English and in German with English sub titles. I much preferred the sub title version. I understand the original actors also did the dubbed version, I still preferred the sub titles--I think the emotion was more intense. I have studied German, but I'm not fluent, so that might have helped me use the sub titles.

I have the Dos Boot uncut version that is rather long and I watch it in German with English subtitles. Just something about a German U-Boat crew speaking English doesn't seem right. Still enjoy Zulu along with Zulu Dawn. I enjoy the longest day as well with all it's cameos. Flight of the intruder reminds me somewhat of the time I spent in the PI. Was their for the evac moved from Clark to Subic and was evaced on the Midway. The trick with the quarters off Cebu was really memorable.
