You need to bring in fighters and 4E bombers to hit his airfields.

I have 10 BG and 7 FG headed for Wellington. They will end up at Melbourne within the month. [:)] Too bad some of the bombers are still the old Bolo, but they will be upgraded.

I have my 5 American CVs with extra fighters on each plus 3 Brit CVs and Hermes until mid-July. The Wasp come in in less than a month. He would have to combine all his CVs in the same area to scare me off. The problem is to find his CVs and get him to fight. He had Mini-KB off Geraldton and operating out of Soerabaja. KB (minus Kaga) has not been seen for weeks. My subs around Truk just returned to Pearl for some fuel and quick repairs and didn't see anything.

I think there are some fundemental things Micheal does not want to touch .. but are very doable with programing ... this would be one .. instead of a hard coded line line .... function_to_genrate hex line from some random choice of possibilities(&varible_that_holds_results)

Trying to hold out in a clear terrain base even with well prepped troops is not a good thing. The forts are now down to 1 and the end is in sight, unfortunately.[:(]

No air attacks in eastern Australia for the last four days. (insert thinking smiley here).

Pending battle for Bourke (see screenshot). He has another 5 units marching in from east. I don't have any that close, but more are headed that way. Forts @ 2 (58%).

With no turns in my inbox, so more future planning is being done. A possible target in 2 plus months 'may' be the Gilbert Islands. As of right now, there seems to be no activity here (see screenshot). Both the 1st & 2nd Marine Divisions plus various support units have already started prepping for some bases (Tabiteuea, Abemama, Tarawa, and Nonouti). We are playing with the new beta patch, so those units that come in as reinforcement are 100% prepped for a base. When I changed them over to one of these bases, they now have 25 to 33 prep levels which may allow a landing sooner. Since this mod is DBB based, I have to learn what all these various engineer type units can and cannot do.

You think he will decline combat? I actually find it strange that so many IJ players happily go into combat with the ONLY thing can delay the Allied advance. Its russian roulette Japanese style I think?! [:D]

Japan gets around 16 heavy CVs while the Allies get around 32 to 34 (I cannot remember the exact number). This doesn't even include the vast number of CVLs and CVEs the Allies produce. The thought is to sink the Allied CVs as early as possible and push back the time table of when the Allied carrier fleet is just too strong. In my other game, in which I'm Japan, the Allies sent some CVs to hit Tokyo in early 43. He lost many ships then and it will not be till mid 44 before he even has an equal number of heavy CVs. My mindset as Japan is to get to 46, if possible.

Hopefully, many Allied players are learning about the ability to place those Marine fighter groups on their American CVs and give you 45 fighters per CV. They may not be as good as the Zero, but shear numbers help and with some training, they can hold their own. Once the Americans get the Avenger TBs, they can get into a sword fight (range 5 or 6) vs wanting a knife fight (range 4 or less).

The game is still decided by your carriers or lack of them, IMO. I've been bashful about using them, but I think I've learned how to be assertive with them, but not reckless. [:D]

I might add to your well written explaination with the old addage of Space, Resources, and Time. I am in a scrap right now Oct 42, where the IJ have traded naval platforms [Resources] (4 CV's 2 CVL's 8 CA's, 6 CL's 20 DD's vs 6 BB's 1 Cl 12 DD's) for Space and Time. Though the USN took less sunk ships some of these platforms are out for a year. Even agaimst these losses it has been hard to get an offense going. I am just now securing the Gilberts and the IJ used the space and time to reinforce the Marshall's, Solomon's, Port Moresby, etc. I suspect the IJ will have much less resources to defend these areas once I get going, but I will be starting at a much later date than my first PBM game where the IJ experinced much less platform losses.

Unless your transport fleet is also in a shamble, you can use this time to move as much supply and fuel you can from the West Coast to at least Pearl or beyond.

I'm finally getting around to reading, "Racing the Sunrise " which John 3rd recommended to me months ago. It goes through the the months just before Pearl and just after. The Americans were having trouble getting things to Luzon in sufficient numbers. Even the few P-40Es send there just before Pearl was pushing the Americans.

In this game, I already have decent pools of Air and GndB skilled pilots. The big problem for the Allies is the lack of airframes in 42. One or two bad days in the air can set you back for weeks to even months depending on the airframes lost. I try to use my limited number of fighters in situations in which I can get at least 1:1, but prefer 1.5:1 or greater. Need to get a good return on my airframes. That is probably why most of my air units do lots of training.

Your "Daily siege" raids - how are you handling fatigue? Are you rotating units or flying something like 60/40 Attack/Rest?

Normally, I try to build up a base as close as possible to cut down on distance and op losses. When an air unit gets below 70 morale, I rest them.

I have lost months and months worth of tank replacements here. It will take until the fall of '42 before they can be replaced by the bi-monthly to monthly convoys to Cape Town dropping off tanks.

South Pacific:
BIG transport convoys leave Wellington on 21st for Melbourne. I have only 20k worth of fuel left in NZ, but my 6 large AOs are almost full with over 85k in fuel. The convoy should reach Melbourne in about 8 days.

Do I need to have the infantry squads upgrade to their '43 version where most have their Anti-Armor values go from 15 to 75??

Southern Australia - What I see happening is Nick staying just above the Emergency Reinforcement line and driving to the west to try to take Broken Hills and then Port Augusta. I don't see him going south to take the rest of Australia until this happens. I might be wrong. I have two full divisions (6th Aussie and 32nd American) plus the last third of the Americal Division in route (arriving in less than 10 days). I have over 175 fighters and multiple bomber groups plus plenty of support troops (BFs). Adelaide is already a size 7 AF, so that will make the skies over Broken Hills dangerous for both sides. I want to make this theater secure, but not devote too much here. However, the 254 & 255 Armor Bde are loading at Karachi for the trip here via Cape Town.

Subs and more subs trying to make access to Melbourne expensive. However, I've yet to see any carriers this far south as I've got PBYs on the northern tip of NZ, Hobart (Tasmania), and Sydney which mean a very narrow gap to get through without detection.

Logically once he secures Perth he will go all in except garrisons for Port Augusta and assess the situation from there on whether he should go any further. Him going for broke probably hinges on two things :
- How effectively could he start blockading southern Australia without having the whole KB stuck down there for months on end. Is it possible ? If you were him how would you try to do it ? Could Brisbane and Port Augusta be the major AFs from which he could do that ?
- Can he through blockade + Industry bombing get you in a supply crisis in a realistic time frame ? If possible than your forces would suffer from chines style penalties and it might be doable.

If not he should than abstain because the risk is too high of getting stuck in a protracted land battle that could turn very badly if you land on his back of just turn it around.

If I were him after analysing this I would probably decide that the safest route is a slow retreat, and just be happy with all the troops bagged and the slowdown given to the India buildup. At the end of the day Burma is always where doom comes from for the Jap, if this adventure in OZ led you to commit lots of troops there that are not building up the indian army, it might be a good trade off for the Jap.

A particular unit? I doubt it.I would just look at the tanks that a unit has, plus their experience and leadership. You get tank upgrades in dribs and drabs. You could manage them to get them to chosen units first.

When the squads go to '43 standards they are pretty much no longer afraid of Japanese tanks. I'm not sure that you have to wait. But in general those '43 standard squad upgrades for the various Allies make their infantry quite fearsome.

I'm the one getting the daily 'siege' runs against my troops. [;)]

Normally, I try to build up a base as close as possible to cut down on distance and op losses. When an air unit gets below 70 morale, I rest them.

I do this plus rotate. I'm not sure but rotating air groups seems to be better for my pilots. But I don't always have the ability to rotate.
