I almost refused to vote in my first election, how do you choose between Nixon and HHH? I wanted a neither choice.

Wallace was available. Didn't he take about eleven states?

Edit: 10 milllion votes and five states. Nearly two more, which would have thrown the election into the House.

My first presidential vote was Reagan, but I do remember Nixon resigning...

I was already working my first job that day. Still remember where I was when I heard the news.

I was in Germany at Graf that day.

I was sitting on a bench on the Virginia Beach boardwalk after work, wearing full polyester. [:)] Somebody walked by with a transistor radio.

I made it into my 6th decade last year. Recall a young player of around 15 who used to write a pretty clever AAR way back whenever...... was always impressed by his efforts, especially as most teenagers I knew (tried to teach) were not in the same league.

I was around when Kennedy was assassinated, but too young to know it.  I do recall the news that Eisenhower had died (I was in elementary school and my mother told us when we got in the car).  I remember the Bobby Kennedy and Martin L. King assassinations.  I remember when Nixon resigned, when the US evacuated Saigon, the Mayaguez affair, and the Chinese invasion of Vietnam.  I missed the draft.  I was a freshman at the University of Georgia when the US embassy at Tehran was taken.  I recall people marching up Lumpkin Street in protest - "Nuke them 'til they glow."  I don't think I voted in the Carter/Reagan election, but I did cast a ballot in the Reagan/Mondale election....I wrote in my vote for Florida governor Ruben Askew.  He was a good ol' southern democrat and I had gone to high school with his daughter, who was lovely, nice, and had an entrancing southern accent.  That's good enough, right?

I voted in elections that Got Maggie Thatcher back into #10...

(in the UK you vote for your local guy, and the leader of the largest party is usually Prime Minister, sort of like the Leader of the House in the US).

In all my years in the UK, I only once got to vote in a close election in my constituency, and that was 1992 in Cambridge. (John Major's electoral win).

Grew up in the Labour heartlands (North East), did my Graduate stuff in the same (Dundee West), then lived in Cardiff South for a trifecta of Labour shoe-ins. Pretty disillusioning to have a race so pre-determined by your location.

Was about to move to a 3-way marginal (all the major parties at about 30%+/-) when instead I came across the pond.

No votes here yet, so don't blame for anything (from either side.)

That may have been my choice, I really don't remember anymore.

Wow. You get old enough the memories DO pile up, don't they? How many Americans remember the Mayaguez?

I'm a little older than you. I don't recall the Cuban Missile Crisis or JFK's assassination. We were in Scotland. I could look out our front bay window at 100% of the USA's SSBN force in Holy Loch. It would have been a flash of light and nothingness if the Missile Crisis had gone south.

My mother woke me for school, crying, and said Bobby was dead.

The choppers lifted off from the roof of the embassy as I looked up from my pre-calc homework.

One of the Tehran ambassador's children was in my class at UVA. We all wore yellow ribbons (first time I think) on our graduation gowns. I had orders to OCS back at my apartment that day. I was reasonably sure we were going to war. Later that fall when I was at OCS the Soviet tanks rolled into Poland and there was brief talk of commissioning us early to get us to the fleet, but it blew over.

I voted for Reagan in 1984. In 1980 my absentee ballot never made it to Newport. I would have voted for him in that one too.

So many memories . . .

I feel that I also deserve credit for learning to read from dad's library of WWII books and speaking intelligently about allied submarines before grade school.

It was a CF from start to finish Canoe. Politicians making decisions instead of military. Confusion at every freaking level. What a mess. Takes more than a pint of Tequilla to get me back to those days.

47 going on 48. Been playing since the old Pac War days which I used to enjoy and WiTP and AE since they were released. Nothing compares to it as regards to the PTO

40, but having a two sons aged 4 and 5 makes me feel much older!

I don't know how ze Germans count, but for someone to be 74 in the year 2013, they were born in 1939.

Would being born on September 1 still make him king of the forum? Or would that have to be the WiTE forum? [;)]
