Burma - almost empty!! I know John likes to do a short hook into the SE corner of India (map view). So, I'm not leaving him anything behind, but one small battalion at Shwebo. The other units are at Imphal or beyond by now.

South China - Due to cease fire for December, I was not able to capture Ichang. I'm in process of shortening my MLR around that base down to Changteh. This area is secure for now.
Meanwhile, the threat is from the 3 LCUs between Hengyang and Kukong. A BF and a British Lysander group just arrived at Hengyang. I need to see what he sent there. I have a Corp moving to cut off units. I may send another BF here as things develop. Stay Tuned!!

North China - The only threat I see now is the one SW of Yenan on trail. He has two LCUs of unknown strength in hex with mine while I have a large Corp (369 AV and 30/46 miles) marching into hex. If I can hold here for a few days, I'll survive. The rest of the MLR is in good shape.

Aleutians - I fell for the trap of seeing first his CVEs up here and then him having TFs at Umnak unloading for days at a time while Mini-DS was at Seattle waiting for CVL to finish repairs from sub torpedo hit. After escorting in Amphib TF to Cold Bay and Akutan, I try to go after his fleeing shipping. I had already seen KB sink two small Cargo TF trying to go between San Fran and Pearl, but had thought wrongly that she was still not out there lurking.

Thus, on 1st I have Mini-DS 4 due west of Umnak (trying to cover anything at Umnak and Adak) when PBYs out of Dutch Harbor spot CVs (29F, 39V, 8Aux) 14 south of Kodiak. My line of retreat to Prince Rupert and/or Seattle seems to be blocked. I spend my day at work thinking about options. I decide to order Mini-DS to cover transports and hope I can get to Kodiak and the extra 2 fighter groups I move there.... I'm also a player who has been saved before by weather fronts. A blizzard is coming from the west as I click on hex after hex to see where the boundary is.

CV movements - KB ends up initially at 180, 52 (8 due SE of Cold Bay) while Mini-DS ends up at 174, 50 (2 due south of Cold Bay) - 7 hexes apart. The AI then has both groups "React" towards each other until we are ONLY 3 hexes apart!! I'm saying to myself that my 2 CVs and CVL are gone for sure vs 5 Jap CVs. However, I'm under a blizzard!! John is pissed and I'm doing a happy dance while my poor transports take it on the chin.

Decision time when order phase comes and I'm only three hexes away from KB and don't think the weather gods will save me for another day. Options are limited.

Option 2 - head NE and try to get to Prince Rupert (fear of being boxed in rules this out)
Option 3 - head due east at full speed and try to get to USA base at Seattle which has lots of BF and Aviation Support there from when Mini-DS was there for repairs. However, I would have to get by KB who is 3 hexes due east of current position. Ruled out.
Option 4 - place both CVs and CVL in same TF with CAs and DDs while breaking off 12 DDs into three small SC TF to go after KB to distract and hope for a nighttime engagement before heading east to safety. Meanwhile, my Mini-DS runs 18 hexes SE at full speed and 'hopes' that I can somehow get safely to San Fran in a few days. This is what I did!

This battle is key for the day!! While I was hoping for a TT hit on a CV or two, the number of op points used up in a long lasting battle resulted in KB being 9 hexes away from Mini-DS.

I've had limited experience dealing with such an aggressive eastern Pacific conquest by Japan. There is probably more to come. [:(] Right now I have lots of xAKs and TKs at or headed to Eastern USA to establish an alternative logistical network that doesn't go through South Pacific. The survival of Mini-DS will help. [;)]

Screen shot - A concern of mine is the supply situation at Pearl. I will need to get some xAKs there soon. I'll try another few small Cargo TFs, but may need to wait for Mini-DS to get some R&R and maybe even for CV Hornet to arrive.

Looks like he is going to try for Hawaii. If he has been able to block reinforcements to PH he may be able to succeed.

The CVL TF near Johnston Island could be bait to bring out your CVs while KB moves down from the north, but I wonder how good his logistics prep has been to sustain KB at sea for so long. It surely needs a pit stop to re-arm now?

I'm still four days behind in my AAR as I just sent turn back to John. The CVL/CVE TF seems to be moving NE and will try to do what KB did and have a blockade between Pearl and San Fran. When he hit Pearl, only 1 BB was hit hard. The others are close to getting repaired. I could do full speed runs to Hilo and back. He had a bad experience in a prior game when he did actually land at Hilo. I think its going to be a partial blockade. I'll send out my subs again to find him if he tries. DS just left Melbourne for Perth, so they may head for CT and then Panama.

Defending Luzon - This mod is using Symon's latest OOB changes for DBB which includes BTS and RA mods. We are using Stacking Limits (SL). Manila can hold 160,000 troops in light urban hex. Bataan can hold only 45,000 in jungle hex. So after packing in the troops at Manila, is that a mistake?? John was able to take a lightly defended Bataan, clear minefield, and then use this TF to regularly bomb Manila and cause high disruption amongst the troops. He also devoted four divisions which is more than normal for a player along with lots of artillery. Was it good play by John or poor on my part?? Maybe a mix??

All the bases are under "China Command" which is NOT a restricted command. The troops are restricted, so they couldn't fly.

Calling all AFBs!!

We all know that there is always the possibility that Japan invades Hawaii when we play this game. It hasn't actually happened yet, but in the next few days it will. Considering John's level of aggressiveness with his navy, it will not be a passive defense that relies solely on LBA.

How would you break the blockade??

I have my DS on the way to Perth from Melbourne. I have Mini-DS at San Fran repairing. Part of me wants to keep DS around the NW corner of Australia to deal with his future invasions now that he has 4 free divisions to use since Manila fell (slightly OT, but Manila's industry was almost totally destroyed). Part of me wants to bring the DS back to USA and combine ALL my carrier strength to run the blockade. Decisions...decisions...

I keep thinking about the logistical cost of John's aggressive eastern Pacific strategy and how to cause him to use up fuel and more fuel to patrol it. Ideas??

Think about the map strategically and how this causes Japan to have to weigh his forces into the east pacific.

It makes other parts of the map vulnerable.

Push him somewhere on the west side of the map with an invasion he has to counter with carrier forces. Then John has to decide whether to split the KB or give up the blockade.

I think it was Canoerebel who faced a Hawaii invasion and decided he didn't really need it, so he went about building elsewhere and poking the Japanese in the eye wherever they did not have enough strength. Of course he was not playing this scenario with Japan on steroids!

Have you thought about what happens in this game if you lose a lot of your CV types defending Hawaii? Do you get enough reinforcements soon enough to continue?

Other Hawaii invasions I have seen usually started with a landing on the west side of the big island, and possibly one of the small islands between there and Oahu. The Allies were able to use LBA and carrier forces to cover massive reinforcement of PH, Lahaina and Hilo. The Japanese tried to bring up more troops and got caught in a bloody air battle that knocked off most of the ships before they could land supplies for their troops, and the ventures ended when they lost carriers near Hawaii. In your scenario, I am not sure if Japan has enough ships and warships to cover multiple simultaneous landings and enough engineers to build air bases quickly. Can Japan sustain CV losses and still hold until it has air superiority?
