Strafing plane ignites something at the very tip of the bow of some big USN warship. Does the Navy store explosive at the tip of the bow?
It appears that the CGI guys failed to include gun barrels on the two gun mounts on the starboard side.

Why would they be remaking this flick …..?
Perhaps because the one from 1976 inserted some politically correct nonsense (the Hawaiian Is did not intern any of its Japanese population) that contributed nothing to the story of the battle AND it followed the so called history of the battle as put forward by Lcdr Fuchida Mitsuo which has since proven to be pretty much made from whole cloth AND it recycled assorted films (with lots of F6Fs and TBFs) from various documentaries along with various clips from the movie "Tora, Tora Tora".
According to the Battle of Midway Roundtable the director asked the publisher for comments on the trailer. The publisher noted that ships and planes were way to close to one another but noted that since the "CGI guys" were game programmers that was probably to be expected. He stated that he did submit a number of other suggestions to the director but also that he hadn't heard back yet (June 2019 issue).

Makers of "Independence Day" you say? Well, at least we know the plot: Randy Quaid will fly Jeff Goldblum to the Akagi in a B-26 and insert an actual virus into the ship's galley, thereby incapacitating Nagumo and the rest of the ship's crew and allowing our flyboys to hit them hard.
Cheers,
CB

There was a Hollywood director on Midway filming the attack (Capra? Ford?) although he was in his own foxhole, not out in the middle of strafing planes.
The mob attack by the aircraft is what disgusts me. The Japanese squadrons that attacked Force Z kept perfect formation despite heavy AA fire, and there is no reason to assume the IJN pilots would break formation discipline.

From that image it looks like some of the attacking Japanese planes have wheels down. This is either a CGI oversight or the Japanese are going to land and take the airfield by coup de main.

Wouldn't those be the D3As that participated in the attack. There were 36 of them after all.
The image is incorrect since the Zeroes would be keeping the Marine CAP off the bombers while they attacked. IIRC according to "Shattered Sword" the D3As attacked first then the B5Ns attacked. The Zeroes did some strafing but only after the CAP had been dealt with. Also according to "Shatterred Sword" (and other sources) the Japanese fighter pilot mindset was such that hunting surviving F2As/F4Fs would be much more satisfying than strafing ground forces.

Interestingly enough, the hardcover front of the 1st edition also shows a carrier, probably the one they landed the
B-24 on. Quite a feat - or what..? I believe they took off again, too...[;)]..!!
From this it is obvious that the carrier had a central place in the story.

Had never heard of the series of books about Biggles.
Perhaps this provides some clarity and understanding to the line "Where the hell was Biggles when you needed him last Saturday" in Jethro Tull's classic Thick as a Brick.

I think that's what they are. I have no idea if this movie will be any good, but I have to say that from the trailer, the CGI ships and planes seem to be correct enough: The trailers show Yorktown-Class carriers with tripod masts, one of the US BBs at Pearl has a tripod mast while another still has a lattice mast.

Not much of a defensible revetment, is it? They only have a thin single row of sandbags on one corner of the ocean-facing side? No overhead cover? No rear cover to protect them from shrapnel behind them? And they only have two feet of sandbag height on that one corner? In June 1942? On Midway? Right....[8|]

Had they seen bullets from strafing Jap fighters detonate the bow of a USN battleship, they'd have built more substantial defenses. Who'd a thunkit?

Unlike the earth quake like video you often see on the local news, at least the camera dude is using his tripod for steady film.

Wasnt Biggles too old for WW2 ? IIRC, he flew for the king and country in the Great War.

The whole thing looks like it could be an epic disaster. Oddly enough I saw the original on the television a few weeks ago. What I did appreciate was the splicing in of original ww II footage of various planes being shot down as well as the use of some Essex class for the US carriers. Does anyone here know which ones were used?
The original also featured Toshiro Mifune as Yamamoto. He is the star of many of my favourite Kurosawa films such as Yojimbo, Throne of blood and Hidden Fortress
