combat mode retreat from a similar situation hoping to buy some time in the woods.

The cupboard is bare. If he knew almost all the units recovering in Sian are in Rest mode he could jump the river without a fuss and really complicate things.

Well, think of this collision:

The Glowworm smashed into the side of the German ship, just aft of her anchors. The destroyer’s bow was wrecked as she ripped a massive gash in the side of the much larger cruiser. The German ship took on tons of water, but eventually isolated the damage, and prevented a total flooding. The Glowworm drifted away, a sinking, burning inferno.

Forgot to mention: a bunch of AK at Pearl Harbor have 11 days remaining in their upgrades so that's a hard lower limit on when I can start loading. The two battleships upgrading at San Francisco will be done in a few days and head for Hawaii along with the coming USMC Rgt and the additional AE's and AKE's. One battleship upgrading at Pearl Harbor needs close to 3 weeks and will be the straggler if external conditions allow the operation to commence ASAP.

For greatest distraction I was thinking about holding an international press conference and behaving really stupidly... [;)]

I really can't do anything in Burma just yet, but I doubt any advance into Burma would cause KB1 to respond anyway. I do have both some US ground troops and plenty of US aircraft in Australia. Cloncurry is building pretty fast and, at size 4, I am willing to use it now for B17's; Just waiting for the Imperial troops to appear.

I think I so little to make a credible decoy operation that any such op would be immediately seen as a decoy. If I am right about that, the best misdirection is simply to show up. In the absence of any obvious ploy by me KB1 might just be somewhere else's as part of the Empire's own plans.

A misdirection that might be credible is to have a lot of small craft loading and unloading units to cause lots of radio traffic. Flood the ingress routes to the area with subs and minefields as well. Combine that with judicious recon and it might work.

But you are probably correct that just suddenly showing up might be the best way to go unless something comes up in the meantime.

OK, I'm finally caught up in this AAR. This is a great read, WITPQS. Good luck with Cantankerous Olfactory, two words which in human history have likely never been juxtaposed before.

One comment on paras. I've found that lack of prep for a target should not be a reason to not use them. They will tend to get high disruption on landing, but have very few if any disabled squads, and disruption will decline quickly. They are great for taking undefended dot hexes as well as CD gun-heavy, infantry-light bases.
