Something I was afraid of did happed today. I was waylaid at Soerabaja in the air. I had a feeling that after
I encountered no resistance yesterday that he would put up considerable air defenses today and he did.
While losses were about equal it was not a good outing for sure
I really need to listen to my spidey sense, it was trying to tell me something and I didn't listen.
It's unfortunate, but true that both sides will run into these things now and again. One can only hope
that it is not a disaster when it does. While this was a negative for the Allies, it was not really a disaster.

I see that the A6M5c Zeros were attached to 6 different CVEs and I can see a TF at Soerabaja with
a number of CVEs, I am going to be bolder than normal ( which is not very bold at all ) and move DS as shown.
My DS shows no DL at all. I am also sweeping Soerabaja with 125 USAAF P-38s and P-47s. It is time I start
whittling down his fleet. High speed run.

I hate bad weather

All I can come up with is the most of my strikes were scrubbed due to weather

I am not happy about this. I do not understand and I am posting pictures in the hopes that someone will
be able to point out what I did wrong if anything.

Given the very short range of these MTBs, he must have built them at Makassar this turn. Seems a bit sneaky to me,
but I guess that is the breaks. The Japanese are known to be sneaky
But he had to have at least 10,000 supply there and I guess I captured some of it. It would take a good while to figure out how much of the
45,548 supply is what I brought and what I captured. I will see about doing the work later.

I swept Soerabaja, no opposition

AKA Betelgeuse is seriously damaged, but no fires and since I took
the base she has disbanded into the completely damage port. But, no fires so she will be
able to repair over time and rejoin the action later.

AKE Admiral Day was also disbanded into port, but she still has fires going. They were reduced
from 21 to 13, but sys damage went from 39 to 48. It is a race to see if she can put out her fires
before she sinks. Her floatation damage only went up 1 to 53 so I am hopeful.

And in other news, SS Trusty has complete repairs at Colombo and has been sent out on patrol to a secret location.

With moonlight at 85% and rising it is time to see if he has any night CAP up at Truk. I am sending 48 B-24D and 48 B-24D1s
on a night port attack at Truk. Recon has shown a number of subs disbanded there, we will see.

July 13, 1943

There are times when what happens seems to border on absurdity.

Again, some of the MTBs enter the Makassar hex and instead of my surface combat
task forces engaging them, they get all the way to the unloading amphibious convoy.
Then to top things off APA President Jackson is put in a escort TF by itself and sent to kendari
when there is a port at Makassar where it could pump out the water first. Stupid.

AKE Admiral day has reduced her fires to 8, sys damage increased by 1 to 49. It is looking like she will survive.

I believe that 10,000 supply figure for creation of MTBs is for a TF carrying the supply. A port with supply from the home country can create MTBs with less supply on hand.

As for the SCTF not getting to the MTBs first, 40 NMs is a lot of space and the MTBs and Amphib TF would be close to shore and the SCTF standing off to intercept threats coming from elsewhere. Bad die rolls, I guess. War happens.

+ you only had 2 DD's to screen the BB's & all those transports. I think they did a pretty good job, I imagine the simulation is that if they are screening (aka positioning between) one group of PT's & the transports, they cannot really screen from another group of PT's coming more or less at the same time. Just like the defending CAP gets less effective with each air raid.

The manual states quite directly:

To create a PT boat or barge:
»» Form a Transport TF and load supplies onto it. Once this is done, at any
time the TF may convert some of the loaded supplies to create a TF of
barges or to create a TF of PT boats by clicking on the appropriate Create
Barge, Create PT Boats, Create MGB or Create SSX arrow button. This is
done from the TF Information Screen of the TF carrying the supplies.
»» Build them from any base with a current port size of
at least 1 and more than 10000 supplies.

The first day where he built them I can understand, but not day 2.

Day 1, I can understand a bit since he built them at the port, but day 2 when the TF came from another hex, a hex that had a float plane equipped SCTF passing through, about 50 ships with
radar in the hex, multiple TFs and the MTB TF passed the entire 40 mile hex undetected to attack the amphibious TF

I will just post a picture from tracker of the air losses today

I do not feel it is right to say the least, he lost 60 fighters and I lost 2 B24s. I want to bomb his airfield but I am destroying his fighter force instead.
I stood down my bombers for a few days to reduce wear and tear.

The first day where he built them I can understand, but not day 2.

My bad - I had it reversed on the creation supply requirement.
Is it not possible both MTB TFs were created on day one and that one was undetected until day two? A moonless night or bad weather would also help them avoid detection. IRL, MTBs could use small islets and coves/river inlets as cover until dark. I have seen other instances of non-detection of small fry with massive TFs in the same hex, so it could be a game abstraction that favours them more than other vessels.

After my initial reaction to the first turn that they showed up, I started to understand that yes they were created that turn and
I could not seem them. And that they probably would have started out from the shore and the amphibious TF could easily be the'
first one they encountered. This is the first time I have seen this tactic used so it took me a bit by surprise.

My real anguish and ranting has to do with the next turn. The three MTB TF were in three different hexes, one NW, one West and one SW,
all one hex away. I sent three 1 CL and 1 DD TFs all with night naval search floatplanes active, one to each hex. Two of them encountered
a MTB TF and engaged them. The third did not. That last MTB TF moved into the hex, past a number of Radar equipped TFs including a
4 x Fletcher DD TF and attacked the TF that would be the most inaccessible to it. There was also considerable night naval search in the
Makassar hex. The moonlight was 85 5.
