**************Darwin/Katherine Link-up************

All the B-17's at Merauke and perhaps half the B-24's at Alice can now soften up the LYB's at Katherine. When Darwin airfield is rebuilt, some of the heavies can move there.

I will send the armor, the USMC combat engineers the arty and proably 2 regiments of Marines South. Aus I Corps can rest and refit and start prepping for your Sumatra thingy.

Probably we should sent something to cut off the track to Wyndham.

Dr. Grumpy's patient quote of the day:

"I have a huge pituitary tumor. They told me it was pressing on my sciatic nerve."

"huge" would be the right adjective, then. [:)]

Even though a few units at Katherine are in the red, the supplies are very close to meeting needs and I think we could try an attack after a couple of days of bombing. On the other hand, we could wait for help from the North.

If I were JJ, I think I would try to get the best units out of Katherine and leave a rear guard, hoping the retreating units from Darwin can get out over the desert. They are really in a bad spot trying to hold Katherine.

As you hit those units retreating from Darwin they will attempt to draw supplies, in case Katherine has any. Making them retreat continuously would be best and give your attacking units more and more experience.

************Bali Hai Club, Perth, Jan. 6, 1943(c)***************

<There is a sursuration in the club as two sergeants of the Royal Military Police stride up to the bar. A man in fine linen slacks quickly greets them>

Man in fine linen slacks: Good afternoon, gentlemen. What would you like? It's on the house.

Sergeant Jones: Sorry, governor, we are on duty. Are you the proprietor?

Man in fine linen slacks: Strictly speaking I am acting as a fiduciary, with stipend, for the General Partner.

Sergeant Jones: Ah, may we speak to the General Partner, then?

Man in fine linen slacks: Yes.

Sergeant Jones: Well?

Man in fine linen slacks: Well what?

Sergeant Jones: Well, governor, you said we could speak to the General Partner?

Man in fine linen slacks: You are.

Sergeant Jones: We are what?

Man in fine linen slacks: Speaking to the General Partner.

Sergeant Jones: I thought you said you were the fiduciary?

Man in fine linen slacks: Yes.

Sergeant Jones: So you are both then?

Man in fine linen slacks: Yes.

Sergeant Jones: Why didn't you say so?

Man in fine linen slacks: I just did.

Sergeant Jones: <shows some frustration> Look, this question is for the General Partner. We are looking for a certain Sergeant Dada previously in the employ of His Majesty. Do you know of him?

Man in fine linen slacks: I'm afraid you will have to wait for the LLC meeting in April to adress your questions to the General Partner.

Sergeant Jones: But you are here now?

Man in fine linen slacks: Yes, but it would be improper for me to comment without the permission of the LLC public relations subcommittee.

Sergeant Jones: <beginning to get angry> Well, may we speak to the fidcuiary, then?

Man in fine linen slacks: Ah, why didn't you say so? What can I do for you gentlemen?

Sergeant O'Boyle: It's about Sergeant Dada, sir. We have reason to believe he is in your employ?

Man in fine linen slacks: But wouldn't that be against regulations?

Sergeant Jones: Yes, several.

Man in fine linen slacks: Ah, what does he look like then?

Sergeant Jones: He's black.

Man in fine linen slacks: All black?

Sergeant Jones: What do you mean all black, sir?

Man in fine linen slacks: Well, I mean is he black in entirety?

Sergeant O'Boyle: No sir, not LITERALLY. He's African, sir.

Man in fine linen slacks: Ahhhh, AFRICAN! About 5 ft 10?

Sergeant Jones: Yes.

Man in fine linen slacks: Stocky?

Sergeant O'Boyle: YES!

Man in fine linen slacks: Short cropped hair, mid to late 20's, thick accent? Boastful fellow?

Sergeant Jones: YES! YES! YES!

Man in fine linen slacks: Jack Muslim?

Sergeant Jones: YES! THAT"S HIM!!

Man in fine linen slacks: Never seen the man......

Inside HMS Plymouth, she looks remarkably like the Galatea when I was on her.

I was kidding about the bar until I just saw the Heineken bottles?? Maybe Becks?

Anyway, the question I have is could you really order a beer aboard a Royal Navy vessel? I know the rum ration was abolished a long time ago.

You served on Galatea? Did you serve in the Falklands war?
I thought you were a sub-mariner?

Yes you can. The Junior Rates are limited to 3 tins a day. On Resolution we had a bar with a pump and a spirits bar. Strict bar hours were supposed to be kept but we agreed to keep the spirits bar locked at sea in exchange for a 24 hour bear bar.

Then I saw this:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -Navy.html

Duh.
They paid people to find this out?

The researchers said that there was a tendency for sailors to ‘alternate between restraint while at sea and the opportunity for excess while on shore’.

(Nods sagely) Yes, I have heard some navies put everyone through a surface cruise first in hopes that afterwards the sub boys will remember that not ALL surface ships are hostile.

From the stories, I don't believe it works.
