Pretty much how I found things on turn 39.
I will put more of the background into why the blizzard offensive was called off in February when we get to the Tambov sector where we had a lot more success. But yes between Rostov and the Mius river it was essentially a dead heat. And deciding there was not much chance of getting anywhere further we started to rail out mountain units to places where they might be more useful.

Here is the assessment our southern commander gave of his sector on turn 31
Mamluke, Soviet South Commander
for the South, I achieved my main objectives:
1- forward defense of Rostov and able to fortify the Don and Donest river.
2 - secured the Entire Don river line up to Voronezh (mostly)
3 - Crimea being a active theater
4 - securing a the tambov pocket.

Strategic Intentions for February:
hey Guys, I want to talk about the strategic plans for February onwards
the Red Army has made a remarkable recovery and was able to push hard consedering the situation.
however, the truth is that our army as remain below 4.7 million men and 49K guns since the winter despite taking "reasonable losses" by Soviet standards

to be blunt, the reason the South is seeing such success is because the Germans were very reluctant to use Motorize divisions and refuse to send out panzer divisions
not to mention keeping very high quality Infantry in the back.
coming February, that is going to change, drastically.
in one of my games , I played my winter offensive well, however as it it March, the Germans lost the 1st winter penalties and went on the offensive. he caught the red army with its pants down and the Soviet front in the South disintegrated. and I had about 5 Million men, a much stronger army then in this game.

NEVER underestimate the Germans in 1942 is what am saying.
so in February I want to stop the offensive and begging preparing for defense. It's a shame I won't be able to recapture Voronezh, but building fortifications is more important.
as for the North, I also think it has stretch the front very well! tying down many German divisions. however we should stop attacking here and spare manpower and resources to enlarge the red army.
as for the center, the Moscow front. if able, perhaps the offensive should still continue.

I saw a parody of a phone call between them trying to order pizza I think?
I was thinking of editing together scenes of Stalin and Hitler on the phone from Downfall and Death of Stalin and doing a parody for this game. But there was unpleasantness for a while. But with that sorted it could be a fun idea for everyone now?

Plan is to do each section of the front for the whole blizzard rather than showing the whole front turn by turn. A bit of an experiment but the suggestion was it might make more sense. We are going from South to North so centre is coming up next. But if a whole front screenshot is wanted let us know!

Legacy of the Voronezh pocket holding on is that this sector is not ready. It is held by regiments stretching a long way down from 4th army, with 6th army having just finished off the Voronezh pocket only just taking over. No fortifications have been built up. And motorised units that should not be in winter quarters are still out in blizzard trying to get there.
There was an opportunity during snow to use a few units to flip as many hexes of enemy territory as possible. That way at least they would have to pay 6MPs or more simply to reoccupy them. Instead now we have several stacks of enemy units just to the south east of Tambov in those very same hexes this turn.

Voronezh is right on the command boundary for Soviet north and south commanders

Only a few attacks, successful across the board (except one scout attack), but mostly the entire central front has been mobilized and is moving towards the front. Only a very small force has been left as reserve. A soft start, mostly probing to see where the enemy is weak. Am expecting things to escalate next turn.

No success for Center in Tambov district. Our units there are simply too weak. I will see what I can do in the upcoming turns.

I see an opportunity for encirclement at Tambov. cooperation from our armies is nessecery.
also to help your side, I can relieve the rifle division facing the city with one of my brigades. we should only attack the city when encirclement is complete
I propose to temporarily hand you the 19th Cavalry corps for action in this area.

The enemy should feel the pressure now!
If he doesnt reinforce that sector during his turn, there is going to be a marked breakthrough in his lines
I wish we had a couple of strong tank divisions, that would be deadly for him
Enemy lines north of Tambov are really crumbling, ill send a screenie : p
Will move as much reinforcements there as possible
Note how one of their divisions is almost cut off!

I noticed that some of the screenshots have a different map graphics? Is there a setting for that or is it some mod? As it appears to look nicer and be much easier to see stuff especially with all snow.

many use them. Myself I prefer and use Jison's map, but "A rainy day in Russia" is based on it and also very popular.
I don't use the counter mods myself (or maybe part of it? not sure), but I use the equipment and leader mods.

Stalin - Christmas is bourgeois holiday; everyday is Christmas in socialist worker's paradise. We hang big sign "Lager und Braut this way" to recruit oppressed Axis serfs to Siberian holiday camps.
