I'm not sure what to send yet.  Considering that Fuso and Yamashiro just made a 7-8 hex dash to Madras last turn, most of the single engine stuff may be impotent.  Good thing I guessed right and pulled the planes out the day before.  I've got a bunch of base forces at and heading to Cochin.  It's level 5, and I can run my Colombo harassment out of there.  60,000 in supply helps, too.  I wish I could draw some supply away from Madras to more deserving locations.  I have a similar amount of supply there.  about 45k are unloading at Karachi now.
 
I'm thinking of maybe populating about three neighboring islands simultaneously.  That could help at least catch bombardment groups as they leave, at least.
 
My carriers reached Sydney last turn.  Lexington and Saratoga need two days in the yard.  Saratoga now has F6Fs on board, with two left in the pool.  Transports and five battleships will reach next turn.  If I know KB has departed it may be worth a shot -- maybe dump Americal on Suva in the bargain.  Intel shows more troops inbound to Nadi.  How far out, who knows.
 
Good to see Cannonfodder's AAR still lives.  I'll enjoy reading it when this wraps up.

I am confused as to why you are having supply issues in India. Set up a few CS runs from Abadan to Karachi carrying fuel and supplies and you should be flush with both shortly.

As to a base to use against Ceylon, I recommend sending some base force troops and construction engineers to Madurai to build that base up. It is very close to Ceylon yet inland so completely safe from bombardments. He has to land forces on India to capture or stop it.

NJP likes to beat me up against the Indian Coast when I deploy troops there.

I don't know why either.  I have something like 1.5 million in fuel sitting between Karachi and Bombay.  I believe nothing is turned off, but I'll double check.  On the previous page, I linked some tracker files in case some genius could make sense of it.  Abadan's dry for now supply-wise, as I've kept xAK convoys going in addition to tankers.  Ditto for Aden.  I'm also keeping regular runs from Cape Town.  It feels like band aid after band aid.
 
I do have engineers working at Madurai, but it just needs some time.  If supplies don't flow there, it'll be a problem.  I'm also moving a bunch of replenished Indian and UK divisions to the base two hexes NE of there, in case he tries something.  The problem with Cochin is that I'd probably get zero warning of a bombardment mission, so it's probably a one-trick pony.  If I get enough fighters there, I could probably stage the two remaining RN battleships there -- make them actively useful.  Recon seems to indicate he's pulled back a bit on the airpower at Colombo.

I find Abadan runs short of supplies very quickly if you set up CS TFs from it.

I only use player controlled TFs for supply from Abadan as you have to stand them down for a while sometimes.

Aden becomes a far better source of supply although you need to ship fuel to it from Aden for it to handle the traffic.

Aden is low on supply at start but ramps up better than Abadan.

I am not sure the total of your knowledge so lets go back to basics.

First of all, having a huge stockpile of supply somewhere does not help you one bit. Most bases will keep minimum supply. What was frustrating to me at first was it seemed that the bases never had supply. However, bases dont usually need supply. They need to get it to the units nearby that use it.

So, as long as your units are supplied, do not focus on actual stockpiles at any one location.

If you want a stockpile at a specific place you can manually up the amount there on the base screen. it is usually 3* whatever you set it at so 1000 will get you 3000 supply, 10,000 setting will get you 30,000 supply. If it isnt going up then send a top HQ (command?) to the base. The computer tries to maintain 25,000 supplies at any base with a command unit for resupply purposes.

More importantly, what is your overall strategic plan? I havent been paying close enough attention to your situation. Do you have naval superiority yet?

If he doesnt have any supply in india, it wont do him much good to have hundreds of thousands stocked in Abadan. Yes, it runs out quickly but the turnaround time for ships is really quick.

I emptied Abadan out fairly quickly. I think its replenishment rate is something like 500 per day, so I've been down to a convoy a month from here. Likewise, I've run Aden down too.

Despite base supply in India being minimal, my LCUs seem to be fully supplied themselves, from what I can tell. I was wondering if all my US and UK beat up divisions were drawing a bunch of supply in rebuilding. Lots of these units are out of country now, but my interior bases are still pretty sparse. All the well supplied spots are on the coast.

I've opened up the demand on all the intervening Indian bases, hoping that helps the pipeline, but it doesn't seem to have worked much.

Any real grand strategy is on hold for now. He still rules the seas. I have three fleet carriers and 8 CVEs, with more inbound. They're all at Sydney. I've been tempted to confront KB with them, hoping all the jeep carriers would diffuse his effort. In a prior game, I completely wiped out KB in a similar situation.

Any offense right now is in the far north. A mountain regiment bound for Amchitka is loading up on Adak. This spot appears to be unoccupied, so it should go quickly. The Attu force will be loading up shortly, probably next turn.

The USA 43rd Division is unloading at Christmas Is. The same convoy will pull a bunch of base forces off to deal with the overstacking. I have way too much there anyway and can send them to one of the islands near Pago Pago. I'd like 3-5 interlocking bases set up there fairly soon.

All my other PBEMs seem to have been run by fairly conservative IJN players, so it's greatly tainted my mindset. I'm doing things now that I wouldn't have considered in prior games, and will probably accomplish earlier in any new ones. I honestly don't mind getting beat up like this, as I'm learning quite a bit from it.

Yea, night naval bombardment makes most single engine planes not very useful for naval strike. Cruisers can bombard from 9 hexes which makes it even more difficult to find suitable planes. That being said, by spring 43 you should be getting some decent air frames that can counter bombardment fleets. For the Commonwealth forces the Beaufighter is an excellent plane. The fighter-bomber variants are good long range escort planes and the torpedoes bombers variants can drop torps at range 8 to counter BB bombardments. For the US you can use USN fighters with drop tanks for escort. The A-24B is a great dive bomber with an normal range of 9 which gives you the ability to counter cruiser bombardments. And there are probably more I'm forgetting since you're like 3 months ahead of me.

It sounds like to me you aren't shipping enough supply from Cape Town. How many xAKs do you have for this task? No reason you can't have 200+ ships on this convoy route. That's hardly a "band aid"; its a real solution. Stop sending xAKs to Abadan and Aden and send them Cape Town instead. Frankly I never send ANY xAKs to Abadan and I never use Aden as a supply source. As you have found out neither "A" base gets much supply but Cape Town gets plenty.

Do you have naval superiority yet?

Japanese still have a large edge at sea. Allies have lost 3-4 CVs and the Japanese haven't lost any I believe. Would be curious to see a recap of important ships lost on both sides, however.

Aden needs to keep some supplies to load on TFs that are taking reinforcement units from there to anywhere on-map. I use 100K as my minimum supply stock for Aden. A lot of that can go when a division is moved out.

I would agree after 43-05-14 which is when the Mediterranean opens; before that date, I prefer to send them "troops only" if out of supply.

That said, I would always be sure that Aden has enough fuel

This is about 15 hexes south of Pearl Harbor. I took a lot of ground losses in this, as they were getting shipped to the Samoa area. Hopefully I can get payback on this. All my carriers departed Sydney, bound for Suva. Likewise, I had kicked off five battleships towards New Zealand for possible Suva use, and they're also making way to Suva/Nadi. I'm not worried about Betties at Noumea, as the fighter screen should mostly keep them at bay. If I can bag Yamato, it'll be worth it. I have other transports further along for Pago Pago which he missed well to the south. Hopefully, CF doesn't try something at Pearl, as my air strength is fairly weak right now.

My invaders are a hex away from Attu, so that'll be happening shortly.

Nothing overly serious -- worst in the 20s. Everyone can make around 20 kts. Everyone's on full speed back to Pearl. I think they'll probably get away, but I'm not so sure about the transports.

16 April 1943

A reprieve.

No further attacks by KB on my ships this turn. I'm not sure if it's Cannonfodder's sense of mercy or if he feared treading too close to Pearl Harbor. He most likely doesn't realize how weak my air is there. I'll be rectifying that shortly. I'm hesitant to send anything south of Hawaii at this point. I've also recalled my carriers and battleships back to Sydney. With my luck, KB is making a beeline back to the Suva area. Intel Monkey needs to do his job and get me some intel.

My fourth A-36 squadron arrived in the East Coast, and they've all been sent west. In Australia, my US forces from India landed at Perth (two USA divisions, one USMC division, one USMC armored battalion and one USA regiment). They're headed to the Australian east coast. I can probably swamp any invasion at this point. Lots of the lesser bases have plenty of AV there.

17 April 1943

A rough summation of the damage. About a dozen transports sunk. Two naval and the rest civilian, along with a goodly part of their contents.

Colorado is in the yard for 83 days. WeeVee for 24. Two other battleships will be out in 4 days. It could have been a lot worse.

I got a 1-1 attack on Attu. About a dozen casualties on my end while he gets a few hundred. I'll shock next turn.

I have base forces populating Madurai and Trichinopoly, and as expected are drawing hardly any supply, despite two big bases being just a few hexes away from each. Yes, I did up the request.

I've flipped Hornet's VF to F6Fs, though she and Lex will need time to fill them out.

Did you lose a lot of ground troops with the transports? [:(] The BB damage doesn't seem bad at all. Much better than the combat report suggested.

I think this battle shows the importance of securing lines of communication. Gotta try to get naval coverage along your convoy routes. And if there are open spots you can put patrol ships or subs to wait for planes to fly over them. Also, I don't think this was a full KB attack! IJN has a lot more CVs than 1941. The numbers on strike were too small.

I have lots of base forces at the two southernmost inshore bases in India, and they're getting hardly any supply. All the big costal bases have supply ranging from 40k to 90k. Cochin and Madras are practically across the street. I've maxed the request at any empty intervening locations.

Two things will help get supply to those Indian bases
- put lots of troops there
- build the base larger. Once it has level 3 in total development it should have enough draw that you do not need so many troops to get supply there.

Do you have a lot of new units filling out in India? That will consume a lot of supply too. I leave the new units arriving at Aden until they have filled out most of their TOE before moving them to India or wherever. Aden seems to draw whatever supply it needs to look after the newbies, and then some.
