- Coastal batteries at Diamond Harbor: naval guns were supposed hinder movement from Diamond Harbor to Calcutta.. but didn't work at all. All 3 coastal gun LCUs are now packing to move on to Calcutta

That surprises me too - thought coastal batteries would have interdicted that passage? Mines should.

Good to see the P-40k do well at over 20k - a bit surprised too.

Guess the PTs were limited by sufficient moonlight and calm seas. Did you have good PT Boat skippers?

For a TF passing through at night you need radar to detect it. If DH has no radar he slipped by in the dark.
Mines are laid first near the shore where they will only affect landings. You need over 200 mines before you get out far enough to tangle with bombardment TFs, which rarely approach closer than 6000 yards (even if their stand-off setting is 0). That is just my observations - not developer info or scientifically tested.

there were no mines at Diamond, and I agree I will need at least 200, I am planning to lay 300 (I have two ACMs on the way)... and I know it will take me a long time to reach that level with the poor mining and low pools available.

As per radar... yes. there was a radar in Diamond Harbor:

This is now moving to Calcutta... as I want as much naval support I can get there for potential TF rearming

EDIT: This No1 Mk1 GL1 radar is garbage, this according to both wikipedia and the editor (60 range, 30 accuracy). I guess I will try again with a SCR-270 before I moved the guns to Calcutta

It is also interesting to notice that only that "PT boat "task force is moving directly... any other TF I tried to set to Calcutta is moving through Diamond

can it be that PT boats are allowed to pass impassable reefs?
if so, hats off to the developers to even think about these kind of things

reefs and rivers. The hexside types used are as follows:

The K version has an upgraded engine... which translates into better speed, and speed is key
P-40K is faster than both A6M2 and A6M3.. these were the two main enemies yesterday.

Pilot quality was good, there was nothing particularly good about the mission setting. As you can see they were at 10K vs sweeps at 20K. They were not even doing CAP. Instead they were supposed to escort bombers to Comilla.. they probably reacted to their base being attacked... Also important to mention, I ended with 10 damaged planes, so I am sure there was luck involved.

When doing CAP, try setting range to zero as this sometimes help too. Check the commander air skill... and be ready to spend a lot of PP points in changing the horde of incompetents you get by default.
If you are in May 1942.. you should already have access to P-38s... use them with your best pilots

Regarding the carriers... I think I have a window of opportunity of a few turns before they come into play. It is now or never, as they would eventually be discovered.
Also, I am willing to risk them because naval losses had been minimal in the last few months

Saw a documentary on TV about "the engine that won the war". The early P-40s were powered by the Allison engine which did not perform well at altitude nor during high stress maneuvers. Eventually it was replaced with .... the Rolls Royce Merlin engine - same one that made the Spitfire a legend.

The US was licensed to manufacture it and improved it with a cast aluminum block that was lighter than the British design, and started adding turbochargers and other refinements that really upped the performance. It was so good it was used in the P-51 after the original engine on that aircraft proved disappointing.

Not sure if the USN used the Merlin engine - Ernie King didn't like anything British, except the loan of their aircraft carriers when the US ones were all in repair and refit.

Interesting stuff in there. I liked this comment about the P-40L (which was a stripped-down version of the P-40F):

As I anticipated, cruisers at Chittagong were a complete surprise for the Japanese.

What I didn't anticipate was that the many fighters set to sweep (from multiple bases) will not fly, while the bombers at Benares would... in short this was a bloodbath.

But lets start with the good news:
- Somersville cruisers found a 3-destroyer TF, likely on ASW mission. DDs Hasu and Yugiri sunk, DD Hatakaze run away

- Then they found a 3 xAKL "fuel bandidos" trying to steal some of my diesel.. that's low [:D] 3 xAKL down!

- The cruisers even managed to bombard Chittagong, although it is important to mention this happened after the air battles.

Before we moved on to the bad news... another carrier sighting status:
B5N2 Kate attacking a Electric Boat S-18 class SS at 43,65

this was on the PM phase, and is near Pt Blair... carriers are one day away at full speed, two days at cruise

OK now the bad news. I planned to close Chittagong, with naval bombing, followed by several sweeps, followed by all my available bombers. Things didn't work at all.

- No fighter sweeps. I had it from 3 bases, but no one fly, AM or PM [:@]

- B-17s from Benares did fly.. I am actually surprised how well they did against so many Tojos and Zeros

- B-25Cs and Wellingtons also fly: they were torn to pieces.. specially the Wellingtons


- Last but not least, the tanks NW of Benares were supposed to massacre what was supposed to be a small LCU, but recently arrived 5th IJA division spoiled the fun


For next turn I will repeat the bombings of Chittangong, I know this will mean casualties, more so considering their AA defense was particularly good. But I don't want to leave a job half done... The base needs to be closed and there are many damaged planes to destroy.. so one more shot, then I will let them rest or attack lightly defended targets

You are right with regards to Benares bombers... yesterday only Benares flew.. today hopefully all other bases will: Calcutta, Hyderabad, Jamshedpur, Cuttack
thus I hope Benares is not again doing all the heavy lifting..

Bombing of Chittagong was successful. Prester John withdrew his fighters and I was lucky I got "clear" weather:
Naval bombardment did nothing, and this was expected as ammo was very low. still good news that the cruisers were able to withdraw to Calcutta uneventful. They disbanded and will hopefully repair and rearm soon. Eastern Fleet's 300 naval support are in transit to Calcutta, shouls take them a few days to arrive as they recently disembarked in Cochin

(FOW) Air Results were good. Chittagong won't be bombed again, as BBFanboy mentioned, there is a KB risk. Benares bombers will likely rest, the others will shift to different targets, likely inland to avoid any KB LRCAP trap

I agree it was a lot of armor, and I was very afraid of unleashing it.

At the end I decided to go for the following reasons:
- Clear terrain
- I knew there were no forts as the 5th infantry just arrived
- 2E bombing missions would be launched to increase disruption
- last but not least, I have several units that will become irrelevant very soon. As you can see from the picture, I have many "restricted" units that can't cross into Burma. Their "mission accomplished" banner will be raised as soon as they reach Cox's Bazaar


unrestricted 7th Armored brigade will leave out of theatre in 192 days... strong candidate for leading the shock attack [:'(]
