Why are you surprised by a tanker convoy going north toward Abadan? It should be going far off the coast of course, but he may have overlooked setting such a course for that one. The subs he would not have known about but he should have guessed that Bombay airfield was dangerous.

EDIT: I just remembered that you can set your view to only show manually controlled TFs, so if that tanker TF was a CS or Autoconvoy one it would not show up for him.

I wasn't surprised to see a task force going to Abadan but not that close to the coast. He either forgot about it (like the one that got too close to Tarawa and paid for it) or he was sure I wouldn't have bombers in the region, which was the case until the convoy stumbled into my subs. Then I was surprised that the convoy just kept moving North along the coast and wasn't immediately redirected further West.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Nov 22, 43

Nothing happened this turn other than three gazillion sub spottings and halve a billion attacks on them... one thing of interest was the 1000th reported Allied ship sunk though... the Allied lost 1000 ships and we lost ships worth 1000 pts... [8D]

ASW attack near Taytay at 76,82

Japanese Ships
DD Uranami

Allied Ships
SS Harder

that's one of my ASW "hunter groups" but they are nothing but shit... I guess I've never spent as much on ASW in over ten years of playing as I have done in this game, for literally no better result than usual... after the total victory over China and India I had no other use for my IJAAF medium bombers than to fly ASW and about 350 of them have been doing this for over a year now together with another 300 IJAAF floatplanes, dive- and levelbombers... the result is meh... while the ops reports look totally silly with over a hundred sub spottings and surely over a dozen attacks daily we are sinking probably three subs per months with air ASW... doing so we lose 4 aircraft on ops at least EVERY day! I have bomber pilots with 90 ASW skill already... my ships are nothing but targets, the escorts are useless and the ASW groups even more so... the fact that there are lots of subs around NOT moving at all, being attacked by medium bombers for three or four dozen times over weeks (no joke!) and still being afloat makes ASW just a joke in the game... what the Allied had in the Atlantic looks like kindergarten compared to my ASW setup, my convoy routes are full of aircraft and ASW groups, there isn't a square inch on the routes a sub could hide...

yet the sinkings are literally not happening... the only reason the enemy subs aren't scoring more is the fact that most of the time they don't encounter any of my convoys due to their routes... the only time we were succesfully engaging subs with ASW groups is when they were in shallow hexes...

real highlight of today was the commissioning of CV Kasagi, another Unryu class carrier joining the fleet... there are two more Unryus coming until mid 44 and CVL Ibuki and that's it, there won't be more carriers to be built... CV Shinano was halted on day one and won't be built, just not worth it...

that's the reason for showing this day's combat report, the Allied have returned to India!!! As expected they are landing in the West very close to Ceylon... nothing we can do about it, it's surprising they return that late as Mundy had to know that Western India has been empty all the time and he had recon over there... so far only five units reported to have been landed but I guess we will see most of Ceylon's troops landing here as soon as the airfield is operational again as it was totally damaged due to partisan attacks... gonna be a long way back to Burma...

What is the altitude for your ASW aircraft?

6000ft as everything lower ends up in no morale left within a week. Also had the bombers at 1000ft, 2000ft, 3000ft for some time, no difference in the results. Dozens and dozens of "xy sub reported hit" but not more than at 6000ft and not more sunk or driven off subs.

I agree, more rest as needed. In fact, there should be a setting for I & I*, although that may increase fatigue. [;)]

Doesn't make a difference and all my ASW/nav search has always been with a percentage rest. All my units fly 70% ASW 30% rest. Fatigue isn't the problem, they are all low at an average of 7-9 fat.

Just to give you an impression on my ASW, don't know how many games you see this. It's not a special day, it's just an average day like any other too. 25 hits "reported" haven't counted the sightings.

And here's the average ASW unit of which I have spread two dozen around the map, covering all my convoy routes. Not a special one, just the average Joes in the unit, I've got pilots in the 90s ASW already. A unit like this has been attacking a single sub for weeks in the same spot, scoring like 40 or more (reported) hits on the same sub until it finally disappeared. And then I don't even know if the sub sank or just moved back to port because it ran out of fuel.

The result of an insane ASW effort. In the end I guess three or at best four subs are sunk per month, note that all those subs on this list are sunk by air ASW, the cause being depth charges is not correct as these subs weren't even attacked by ships and if you look at the individual sub the cause is listed either a 250kg or 500kg bomb. Not surprising the Judies are the most dangerous aircraft to subs as that's the only available airframe that carries a 500kg bomb as ASW loadout. The 250kg bombs are just annoyances for the subs, probably takes 4 real hits to sink them in BABES. Note that the sinkings in November and December aren't corrected yet as many of the subs are later reported as not sunk. Worst example is 8/42 where I had as many hits on subs as usual and only one is left as being sunk.

Considering that I lose at least 150 aircraft each month on ASW/nav search that makes 50 points lost in aircraft for each 10 point sub sunk. [8|] One can argue about mission kills and less IJ shipping lost of course but as I've mentioned earlier, that's not due to ASW it's because my ships aren't where the enemy subs are. A sub that has 10 DL for four weeks, being attacked 50 times or more due to being spotted each day, not moving will still do just fine attacking a convoy with 50/50 escorts/freighters and keep sitting in the same hex the next 2 weeks as I have seen way too many times already.

Then it is probably the mod if it has reduced bomb effectiveness. Someone nerfed the ASW capabilities.

In addition to having more ships, BabesLite incorporates several database modifications that are designed to give a more robust and realistic feel to several combat modes. Database elements have been modified to provide more realistic results for AAA (flak) combat, ASW combat, and certain minor, but nevertheless fun, aspects of naval combat, like land bombardment and coastal defense fire. The modifications include lining-up and unifying data elements within certain fields, so that things interface more smoothly, as well as substantial changes to the data elements themselves

High ASW skill is fine, but remember that EXP is the great "under the hood" variable.

At any rate, I think you are generating good ASW results in reality, and that your expectations need to be managed a great deal.
Considering that I lose at least 150 aircraft each month on ASW/nav search that makes 50 points lost in aircraft for each 10 point sub sunk.

You should tinker with rest/range settings to reduce this - that is an absurdly high rate of attrition.

Related to the above point around EXP, just because attacks and hits are reported does not mean that they are actually occurring.

Out of curiosity, are you combining your ASW efforts with day/night naval search?

I know this. Though the question is if dedicating more ASW assets per mile convoy route than the Allied ever had in the Atlantic should yield any result. As it is, it doesn't. That makes it a bit absurd to me. The reasons why Japan lost pretty much all of it's merchant marine are well known and if you kind of do everything the other way and the only reason you don't lose all your ships is the fact that they just aren't where the subs are then it's quite meh.

Look at the sub losses of the last months, that doesn't look like good results. It's like no result at all considering there are hundreds of aircraft dedicated to ASW/navsearch.

I have squadrons that are all exp between 75 and 85 with ASW skill of 80-90! What else?

The rate of atrittion is not related to range/fat because neither are my squadrons fatigued nor are they flying at long range. I tell you why this is happening. Because that's how the game works. If my squadrons fly ASW and they don't ever find a sub, they don't ever lose an aircraft. As soon as you get hundreds of sightings you get hundreds of times a routine that is checking like spotted, hit, aircraft lost... I have an absurd high number of sub detections each turn which results in an absurd high number of die rolls if the aircraft that spot the subs are lost. Even if the chance of an aircraft loss is small, due to the absurd number of detections you still get 2-8 losses per day.

Each Helen/Betty/Nell/Judy unit on ASW has at least one Jake unit in range flying navsearch. I had ASW groups with 1 DD and 3 E in the same hexes as spotted subs for weeks without anything happening and the sub was spotted or attacked by bombers each day, several times. Result? None.

As so often in the game to me it feels like the pendulum has swung just way too far into one direction, totally nerfing ASW. If I'd used 1/4 of my aircraft on ASW the exact same way in vanilla there wouldn't be any Allied subs left. And yes, I find that absurd too but that's the pendulum at the extreme other side.

Look at the sub losses of the last months, that doesn't look like good results. It's like no result at all considering there are hundreds of aircraft dedicated to ASW/navsearch.

Like I said, manage your expectations.

Historically, the USN lost 52 submarines for the entire war. The loss screen you have shown shows 18 losses between 7/43 and 12/43.

To put that in perspective, you've inflicted 33% of the historical USN submarine losses for the entire war in a five month period.

That seems a very suitable return considering your investment in ASW assets.
I have squadrons that are all exp between 75 and 85 with ASW skill of 80-90! What else?

Night naval search will be useful.
The rate of atrittion is not related to range/fat because neither are my squadrons fatigued nor are they flying at long range. I tell you why this is happening. Because that's how the game works. Even if the chance of an aircraft loss is small, due to the absurd number of detections you still get 2-8 losses per day.

So that's fundamentally not how OPS losses work - fatigue can be assigned to airframes as well as specific pilots and squadrons. Perfectly possible for squadrons to show low/no fatigue, but pilots or planes within those squadrons to have dangerous levels of fatigue contributing to OPS losses.

If you're seeing losses generated as a result of engaging submarines, then that seems to be an altitude issue - although USN submarines have fairly small AA values compared to surface warships, they definitely can and do punish IJ aircraft being operated within their flak envelope. That may be worth considering.
Result? None.

I asked about night naval search too, not just day.

Also, just because the result is not visible to you doesn't mean that nothing happened.

It's at this point I miss Bullwinkle and his laser accurate assessments of just how nerfed USN submarines are in game compared to history. Pleadings of "convoys" and "ASW air assets" fixing the problem would be a drop in the bucket of Japan's ASW woes....
