Good evening, Gentlemen. Ladies.
The barbarians are still upset that you are leaving them out again.
Isn't that a bit rude? Shouldn't such achievement be celebrated instead? [;)]ORIGINAL: Zorch

You tell that to Peter Lorre after he spent 3 years chasing a statue that turned out to be plastic. [:D]ORIGINAL: Orm

This is Maltese Falcon, not that other movie with Bogart, Lorre, and Sidney Greenstreet. [X(]ORIGINAL: RangerJoe

Yes, but he got the papers that were allowing people to leave Vichy French territory. They were signed by GENERAL DE GAULLE! [;)]

Admiral Darlan or some other Vichy flunky signed the transit letters, certainly not De Gaulle.
The film probably used De Gaulle's name because he was the only Frenchman the US public would recognize. It would be like asking the Continental army to honor a pass signed by Benedict Arnold.ORIGINAL: RangerJoe

Not according to the movie! [:D]
Not just that, the GERMANS had those papers for themselves! [:D]
Why wouldn't they honour such a pass? He was, after all, a highly ranked and trusted officer on their side.ORIGINAL: Zorch

Until he changed sides, just like Charles de Gaulle.ORIGINAL: Orm

Charles de Gaulle, if my memory serves, was never an officer in the Vichy Army. So I claim that there was, and is, a difference.ORIGINAL: Zorch

After the armistice was signed on 21 June 1940, de Gaulle spoke at 20:00 on 22 June to denounce it.[96] The Bordeaux government declared him compulsorily retired from the French Army (with the rank of colonel) on 23 June 1940.
You didn't read enough: 'The Vichy regime had already sentenced de Gaulle to four years' imprisonment; on 2 August 1940 he was condemned to death by court martial in absentia...' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_de_GaulleORIGINAL: Orm
