Odd turn. I have seen sub vs sub encounters many times but that is the first time I ever saw a mini-sub sunk by a full size sub. Talk about tiny torpedo targets!

jwolf......the info screen shows that Ive sunk 8 BBs and 5 CAs......so I think that would leave the Japanese Navy with 4 BBs(all damaged) and 11 CAs plus a ton of DDs still.


BBfanboy, jwolf or anyone else reading this thread....I will soon be able to drop the atomic bomb and Ive never used
it before so any advice on its best use would be welcome. I am assuming that the bomb should be dropped as per RL....
ie daytime manpower attack at 30,000'. Has anyone dropped an atomic bomb at 10,000' feet and is it more accurate? And
did the plane that dropped the bomb get blown up by it?

The B-29s were rested last turn but very few seemed to be repairing with the over stacked AFs. There are only 150 ready
B-29s with 104 not ready at Saipan. There are 202 B-29s ready with 91 not ready at Tinian.





CENTPAC

Ive turned Miyake-jima into a defensive AF this turn....the Harpoons were withdrawn and now its all fighters flying
CAP (including a night fighter squadron as Dave night bombed the AF there last turn). There are a half dozen engineer
LCUs there in addition to 140,000 supplies so it should build up into a level 5 AF in 2 or 3 turns. All amphibious
shipping will depart from Miyake-jima this turn and Fifth Fleet will cover their withdrawal back to the Bonins. I
will leave a few small surface TFs at Miyake-jima to prevent Dave from naval bombarding the AF.

A night Japanese naval attack put a torpedo in CVE Matanikau but with 22 FLT it will stay on the line.

PV-2 Harpoons were based on Iwo Jima this turn and they will hit the Japanese AF at Shimizu next turn. The only red"x"
over a Japanese AF this turn was at Tsu....and the carrier TBM-3s will be tasked with knocking that AF out next turn.

AEs/AKEs will depart from the Marianas this turn and link up with the AOs just south of Iwo Jima next turn. On the
turn after that the AE/AKEs and the AOs will rendezvous with the carriers of Fifth Fleet within 5 hexes of Iwo Jima
and Iwo Jima will be loaded with VR and VT replacement squadrons so I can re-arm, refuel and take on TBM-3 and F4U-1D replacements all at the same time.

With the capture of Haichow we have slammed the door shut on the Nanking pocket with over 500,000 IJA troops. With
another 350,00 IJA troops trapped in the Hankow pocket I dont think that there are any significant Japanese maneuver
forces remaining in China...only garrisons.

We will reinforce Shanghai with another 9000 AV and over 30 artillery LCUs from Army Group South before we launch an
assault. The carpet bombing of Shanghai has begun and we have knocked out the AF and port here(they dont seem to be
repairing so perhaps Dave is out of supplies there). We will bypass the 370,000 IJA troops hunkered down in Nanking
and the remaining 9000 AV of Army Group South will reinforce the 5000 AV of Army Group Center troops investing Suchow.

The left flank of Army Group Center...over 15,000 AV total...continues to march on Chengting and Peiping.



Dave is on vacation for a week and a half so I have the time now to totally re-organize the Allied air forces in
China. Very few fighters are now needed to support Allied bombers as Dave has pretty much pulled back all his
fighter groups for defense of the Home Islands. The main 4E AFs in China.....level 9 AFs at Tuyun, Liuchow, Kukong,
Hong Kong, Kweilin and Kweiyang and a level 8 AF at Chungking....are all out of range of the Allied front lines.
New level 9 AFs were completed this turn at Sian, Nanchang and Tsinkiang. Sian and Tsinkiang will become 4E bomber
bases now. All the 2E and tac bombers will move to Nanchang, the level 8 AFs at Wenchow and Hangchow(Hangchow
should turn level 9 in 2-3 turns) and smaller front line AFs at Kaifeng and Nanyang. Moving the 2Es forward to
Nanchang and Hangchow opens up the level 9 AFs at Changsha and Hengyang for the 4Es. And of course basing fewer
fighters in the forward AFs means more bombers.

This was a good time for Dave to go on vacation. With all the air reorganization and the activation of the Soviets
this turn I will need several days to write all the orders.

Ensuing posts will cover the Soviet order of battle and objectives.

Looking forward to seeing the Red Army in action! [:)] As for the A-bomb, I am a novice and have no info about that. All I can say is, good luck!

I also have never used an A-bomb. I understand there is a substantial penalty (PPs??) for using one. With closer bases you can achieve the same result with masses of B-29ts.

BBfanboy....I just read the rules regarding the atomic bomb. You are only penalized one victory level if you use 3
or more atomic bombs.....so I guess that using two is ok. As far as targeting...you need to pick out a specific
industrial target in the target city and that will then become ground zero for the blast. Im now wondering if the
game actually models the geographic layout of each city.....you would want an industrial target that was historically
at the epicenter of the city so that you could inflict the most damage with your blast radius.




GUNS OF AUGUST: THE SOVIETS ARE ACTIVATED


This is the first time in 11 years of WitP that Im actually giving orders to Soviet forces. The Soviet Army.....Army
Group North.... is absolutely massive. I just did a rough count of Soviet ground troops and I came out with over
37,000 AV.... almost as much as Army Group Center and Army Group South combined! The Soviet air forces are very
large also....Im over stacked at nearly every AF as there simply arent enough BFs with the rule changes in the newest
version of AE. I have over 1700 AC at the adjacent AFs at Vladivostok and Viroshilov as they are both level 9 and
have the highest total of BFs of all Soviet AFs. The USSR's idea of a long range fighter is 7 hexes and there are
very few of those. Most fighters have a range of 5 hexes or less. I downgraded as many of the newer light bomber
squadrons as I could to older 1941 aircraft types with longer range and larger bomb loads.

Dave has a couple of CAs and and a CL that Ive spotted on the west coast of the Home Islands......the Russians have
2 CAs at Vladivostok but they have over 200 long range torpedo bombers.....IL-4Ts with a normal range of 10 hexes
and DB-3Ts with a normal range of 11 hexes. I found one air HQ with a torpedo rating....10th Air Army at Khabarovsk
.....that Im strategically redeploying to Spassk-Dalny and then it will march to the sea....and then I will have
torpedo coverage over almost the entire Sea of Japan.

As far as the Russian Navy is concerned....I now have 46 Soviet subs that will fill most of the Sea Of Japan....
should be very dangerous waters for the IJN if they decide to come out of port.

Now in RL...Im sure that all the Soviet troops were all on the border of Manchukuo when they launched their invasion
on 8/1/45. I dont get to start until 8/2.....and then there are only 15 turns remaining in the game with the 2 day
turns so I will be lucky to advance even 9-10 hexes before the war ends. None of the assault troops are on the border.
Many of the Soviet troops are so far away from the border that it will take over a week to reach enemy territory...
especially in Mongolia. So while the Red Army is definitely impressive....it will have more bark than bite. If this
game was to be continued for another 60-90 days I could easily see all of China and Manchukuo being liberated by the
Allies.

The front line for Army Group North is so large that I need to break it down into a western and eastern segment to
show it all on a map. This post 5 will cover the eastern portion of Army Group North...some 19,000 AV of troops.

5000 AV of Soviet troops will advance on Harbin from the E and NE. Another 5100 AV will advance on Mutankiang from
the E. 2300 AV will advance on Mutankiang from the SE. The 6000 AV of Soviet troops in Vladvostok will drive on Yenki
and then Changchun. On Sakhalin Island...an initial force of 730 AV will advance on Shikuka and Toyohara but they
will be heavily reinforced by aerial and naval transports.

GUNS OF AUGUST: SOVIET ACTIVATION....WESTERN HALF OF ARMY GROUP NORTH

The previous post covered the 19,000 AV of Soviet troops in the eastern half of Army Group North. This post covers
the western half of Army Group North...over 18,000 AV of Soviet troops.

I misspoke in the previous post regarding no Soviet troops being deployed on the border of Manchukuo. Here I actually
have 220 AV of Mongolian motorized troops starting on the border at Oboto and an extremely powerful formation of 6600
AV of Soviet troops on the border at Tamsag.

The 220 AV of Mongolian troops will take the lead in an advance on Mangan. Behind them are 650 AV of Soviet troops
at Ulan Bator. The armor/mechanized troops at Ulan Bator have a chance to cross the Gobi Desert and join up with
the Mongolian troops to assault Mangan and then approach Kalgan and eventually move on Peiping from the north. The
infantry at Ulan Bator will spend the entire month of August just crossing the Gobi Desert to get to Manchukuo.

The main army at Tamsag......6600 AV of mostly "Guards" forces...has 3 very powerful units that alone provide over
2000 AV ....1 Guards Armored Division and 2 Guards mechanized corps. Then there are also the remarkable "break-
through" artillery divisions present. Following up the Tamsag forces are 1700 AV at Orderhaan and 3500 AV at
Choybalsan. Togther...this army of over 11,500 AV will advance on Jehol before moving on Peiping from the east.

Then theres the 1400 AV of troops at Ulan Ude and 1950 AV of troops at Chita. I had placed all these units on
"strategic" mode a few turns ago...hoping that they could use both strategic rail and road movement to cross Mongolia
and support the advance on Peiping. Unfortunately....none of these units...not even the armor and mechanized units...
can use strategic movement on highways in Mongolia. So now these troops will be railed to Borzya, along with another
3-4 NKVD divisions.... and from there they will advance on Hailer and then hopefully can approach Harbin from the
north.

The Red Army has some really nice, strong units. I just hope you have time enough for them to do the job!

I think the penalty is a victory level reduction.

The bomb is not properly modeled in the game (Bill mentioned something once about the difficulty of modeling it) and is a huge disappointment in its damage doing capability.

Likely not worth using.

HansBolter....I guess that you and BBfanboy have talked me into not using the atomic bomb. The original rule book
states that only using 3 or more A bombs would trigger a loss of a victory level but so many players on the forum
think that even 1 A bomb could cost the Allies a victory level that I wonder if that rule was modified in one of
the updates. Im too lazy to read all of the rule changes since AE came out and I agree that the destructive power
of the A bomb was not modeled properly so why even take a chance on using it.




GUNS OF AUGUST: THE MOST POWERFUL LAND UNIT IN AE


I was just looking at the Soviet LCUs that were stacked at Tamsag when I spotted the 9th Guards Mechanized Corps so
I attached a screenshot of it. It has an assault value of 809 and the cargo load cost is 66666. Imagine how many AKAs
would be required to load this LCU for an amphibious assault! This is the most powerful ground unit that Ive ever seen
in AE.

Sherman tanks in that Soviet Corps! Have they no pride? Where are the legendary T-34s or the new, secret JS-2 tank with the huge gun?

On an AV comparison basis, I think some of the Chinese Corps can fill out to 827 AV, but of course the firepower is not there.

Here is my other favorite Soviet unit.....the breakthrough artillery division.

Yeah I wish I could have some of those monster Soviet mech corps and arty divs.

FIFTH FLEET

Fifth Fleet covers the withdrawal of amphibious shipping from Miyake-jima. Only a couple of small surface TFs and
scores of PT boats remain at Miyake-jima.

I staged several VF replacement squadrons into Iwo Jima this turn as I was planning to have Fifth Fleet rendezvous
with AO/AE/AKE TFs next turn to refuel, rearm and take on AC replacements. To my surprise....I was able to take on
AC replacements this turn even though the Allied carriers were 7 hexes from Iwo Jima. Allied carriers received 140
TBM-3s, 61 F4U-1Ds and 57 F6F-5s as carrier air replacements this turn. I ran out of TBM-3s in the replacement
squadrons... I still need another 50-60 to fully rebuild all squadrons...so Im hoping to take on those replacements
next turn as we rearm and refuel. Fifth Fleet will sail to a position 3 hexes NE of Iwo Jima next turn to rendezvous
with the AO/AE/AKEs.

Iwo Jima based PV-2 Harpoons bomb Shimizu AF and carrier TBM-3s hit the Japanese AF at Tsu on the PM of the 2nd day
of the turn and another 50 Japanese AC are destroyed on the ground. Recon shows nearly 200 AC still at Tsu even though
its AF is 98% damaged so Im beginning to wonder if the recon is accurate.

KB has sunk over a score of xAKs over the last few turns and now the USN will finally do something about it. The
carriers repairing in port at Oahu are emptied out of the shipyards. CV Intrepid with 23 ENG and CVE Tulagi with
19 FLT 5 ENG are sent out from Pearl harbor along with 4 CVEs that just completed repairs. The damaged carriers
can only sail 3 hexes per phase but they will head due north and attempt to engage KB.



GUNS OF AUGUST: THE SOVIET ADVANCE BEGINS

Most of the Soviet army is still trying to reach the frontier of Manchukuo and northern China but the
powerful armor/mechanized force at Tamsag advances 2 1/2 hexes down a highway towards Kalgan. The 1st Guards
Airborne Division is dropped at the importatnt crossroads at Tolun. Not only do they secure this dot hex for the
advancing
Soviet armor/mechanized force of 2200 AV but they can recon Japanee defensive positions in front of Kalgan.

What is the total AV of Soviet troops on Sakhilin as of the Soviet activation?

Can't answer that question off hand but almost all Soviet units are unrestricted, so a few amphib ships could quickly ferry overwhelming force to Sakhalin. Shikuka is a clear hex so even with forts it is vulnerable.

mind-messing.....the Soviets have about 750 AV at Alexandrovsk. There are an additional 500-550 AV at Ohka but there is
no road from Okha to Alexandrovosk so you need to transport all the troops via air or xAK/LST.

BBfanboy.....I havent found any Soviet AP/xAPs yet so Im airlifting all the troops to Sakhalin while xAKs/LSTs bring in
all the equipment.

SOVIET NAVAL ATTACKS BY LAND BASED AIR


After a wildly successful first turn by Soviet torpedo bombers I decreased their max range to 8-9 hexes as there are no
long ranged Soviet fighters for escorts and I feared a Japanese CAP trap. Well Dave had a nice fat target of TKs off
Hakodate and evidently the Soviet TBs had enough range to get slaughtered by the LRCAP trap. The Soviets lose 52 DB-3Ts
and 72 IL-4Ts. There arent enough replacement TBs so Im converting several TB squadrons over to A-20s and B-25s.....
these will be more effective any way in ground bombardment of Japanese troops.

Recon had spotted a BB in port in Tokyo and Ive bombed Tokyo port the last 3 turns but the BB never seems to be in port
when the Allied bombers arrive. The commitment of BB Yamashiro at Miyake-jima is a real game changer. Im willing to risk
cruisers to defend Miyake-jima but I wont risk a BB unless there are hundreds of carrier fighters LRCAPing the base
and right now 5th Fleet is out of position as it takes replacements and re-arms near the Bonins. Dave will probably
bombard the airfield and port at Miyake-jima next turn with BB Yamashiro and the CAs and I cant stop it so I will need
to evacuate all the fighters from the AF and all the remaining surface TFs and cripples in the port. Fifth Fleet losses
2 CLs, 2 DDs and 4 DEs in the surface action off Miyake-jima. I will leave 2 small night fighter squadrons on the AF
at Miyake-jima and use the B-29-1s to mine Yokohama as all ships that transit from Tokyo must pass through Yokohama.
Other than that.....the only thing between the IJN BB and CAs and Miyake-jima is a force of some 60 PT boats. Fifth Fleet
will sail adjacent to Torishima so it can rendezvous with the cripples that are evacuating Miyake-jima.

The 1st attack on Tokyo went well as Allied escorts held off Japanese CAP and LRCAP but successive waves of TBM-3s
were slaughtered over 2 days. The Allies lose 443 AC in A2A combat over the Home islands this turn(187 TBM-3s)
including Soviet TB losses...the worst aerial defeat of the war. Overall...the Allies lose 557 AC this turn vs
Japanese losses of 153 AC.

Ive spent the last 2 turns sending TBM-3 replacements to Fifth Fleet and I have fewer TBM-3s now than I did 2 turns
ago. In fact.. Im running low on F4U-1Ds and TBM-3s so Im down converting to F6F-5s and TBM-1s. I dont really need
the 14 hex standoff range any longer as the threat of a massed naval air strike against Allied carriers has been
greatly reduced. However, I believe I was wrong in the strategy of gaining air supremacy over Japan with Fifth Fleet.
Even with killing Japanese AC at 2:1 and 3:1 ratios over the last several turns I simply cant replace my aircraft
losses while at sea while Japan has no problem absorbing replacements over the entirety of the Home Islands. To
have any chance of gaining complete air superiority over the Home Islands I will need to fly USAAF fighters out of
Iwo Jima and Miyake-jima and that means keeping those AFs open.

Keeping Miyake-jima open means somehow dealing with BB Yamashiro and the CAs. Last turn TBM-3s destroyed all IJN
shipping in port at Nagoya, Tokyo and Yokohama. Ive attached a screenshot of Japan. There are no ships in port at
Tokyo but Dave has disbanded ships in port at both Yokohama and Nagoya. This makes me think that Dave will disband
BB Yamashiro in port at Tokyo next turn after it bombards Miyake-jima because why would I bomb an empty port. Besides....Tokyo is covered by some 1400 AA guns so it has the most port protection from an aerial attack. There
is also a red "x" at Tsu.

Next turn I will have 50 P-51Ds based on Iwo Jima sweep Tsu. 75 Iwo Jima based P-47s will sweep Tokyo. Then over
275 carrier fighters will sweep Tokyo. In the PM phase of the turn...all the SBDs will hit the AF at Tsu(only about
40 AA guns there) while all the TBM-1s TBM-3s, Avenger Is and IIs hit the currently empty port at Tokyo.




HAWAIIAN SEA FRONTIER

The ad hoc Allied carrier force of a partially damaged CV and CVE along with 4 newly repaired CVEs steams north
from Hawaii at a speed of 3 hexes per phase. No sign of KB last turn so we will continue to head N next turn.

I also have never used an A-bomb. I understand there is a substantial penalty (PPs??) for using one. With closer bases you can achieve the same result with masses of B-29ts.

I think the penalty is a victory level reduction.

The bomb is not properly modeled in the game (Bill mentioned something once about the difficulty of modeling it) and is a huge disappointment in its damage doing capability.

Likely not worth using.

Penalty is only if you use more than 2.

17.1.2 USING ATOMIC BOMBS
If the Allies use 3 or more atomic bombs during the game, then the level of victory moves 1
level in favor of the Japanese. This is in addition to the 2 level move if the game ends with
the time expiring in 1946. If the player achieves a Decisive Victory having used more than 3
A-bombs, then the Allies win a Marginal Victory.
If the game ends on its own due to time expiring in 1946, and 3 or more Atomic Bombs have
been used, the best Victory Level the Allied player can hope for is a Marginal Victory for the
Japanese (or a Marginal Loss for the Allies).
