Even though the attack bombers missed Oi, the time spent fighting off the attack will cause her fires to grow - increasing the chance they can never be put out.[:)]

It's nice that the IJN is pretty much neutered here. 
 
Forgot to add that my new F6F squadron is also covering the raids, so this'll be their combat debut.

I don't think you can make that assumption. Yes you dealt the IJN a setback to their CL fleet but in doing so your navy was likewise weakened (and to a greater degree I would argue because BBs are worth more). If another IJN fleet comes here that would invalidate your argument and that could happen at any moment. But if you are able to really take control of the air you may convince CF that it's simply too dangerous to have combat ships near Ceylon.

Nobody decided to cooperate, and I got several smaller raids with minimal escorts. Maybe I should have swept also, but there's no guarantee that it would happen before the raids.

I'll try some big sweeps to see what happens. He has an awful lot of fighters there.

I'm wondering if putting all the planes under a common air HQ would help.

In order to overcome these sorts of heavy air defenses I think you really need to get your cruisers involved to hit the airfield at night before your bombers come flying over. If it were me, I'd do something like 1 day of heavy fighter sweeps followed by a cruiser bombardment at night then a bomber attack. I think its a mistake to rely on sweeps the same day to clear out enemy fighters if you know they are there. Also, you could try using more night bombing when daylight raids are going to be too costly.

Yes, this will help a lot to coordinate your strikes better. Having a level 9 airbase to hold all your bombers will help as well.

It's hard to do anything about these, being as effing fast as they are. Within the next 3 days or so, I'll have Colombo smothered in subs.

I took another big bombardment at Suva today. This one hurt a bit.

What appears to be KB is sitting three hexes SE of Suva. My convoy from New Zealand is being routed westwards towards the Tahiti area to avoid this.

My Jugs are loading up for Suva, along with some B-25s at San Francisco. More supplies to. I'm also rebasing some xAKLs and subchasers from Pearl to Suva. From there, I can deal out some supply to my new satellite bases.

You really need inland bases for your long range aircraft. No sense leaving them on the coast to be hit by naval bombardment like that when they have the range to hit all of Ceylon from an inland base. What does the base situation look like in southern India?

I've taken the rather extreme measure of spending the 1,000 PPs and converting this base to USN Pacific Ocean Area Command and then building about 20 PT boats there. I also upped a bunch of the boat captains. Maybe, I can reduce bombardment times, at least.

I did a random malice raid at Rabaul from Portland Roads. Some revenge anyway.

Palembang is one of the most important bases the Japanese have in the entire map. It's only logical that eventually a full Japanese division would be based there. Especially with China being a footnote in history.

Mining seems to have minimal effect on bombardments unless you can get over 300 of them. Lower numbers seem to be treated as closer to shore (amphib landings will hit some) but bombardment TFs usually stand off at least 4K yards, even when their stand-off distance is set to 0. Better to mine a hex he has to pass through.

They did a number on them, despite the CAP bleed from Port Moresby. I remember a thread in the War Room from a few months ago asking about fighter casualties from medium bombers. Well, the 25s did bag a pair. These are definitely "attack bombers" as they strafed on the way in, despite being set at 1,000 feet. Looks like all that training time paid off. This bunch flew from Cairns. I moved a squadron of 38Gs there to help with any future jaunts. One of those things I didn't think of before.

This is three fleet carriers and 8 CVEs, so there's *LOTS* of CAP present. 3 CVs and one CVE are fully stocked with F6Fs, too. One of the CVE TFs is taking the lead, and the rest are following. Should the worst happen, the accompanying BBs will probably siphon some off, too.

My TF from New Zealand is unloading at Savaii, dropping supplies and dive bombers. I should have an interlocking grid up before too long.

In my current game I had a battle where I concentrated 5 CVs, 11 CVEs, and 15 BB/BC against a 7 CV strong KB in Dec 42. Like you I thought that heavy CAP from my CVEs would give me the edge. I was wrong. Yes my heavy CAP/AA took down around ~250 IJN planes but at the end of the day 7/11 CVEs would sink and 2/5 CVs were crippled while the damage to the Japanese fleet was rather minor. My slow BBs being in a separate TF than my CVs or CVEs meant they contributed absolutely nothing to the battle as the Japanese didn't target them at all. The only thing that saved me was the fact that the Japanese had fuel problems after 2 days of full speed and a night charge of my fast capital ships managed to sink some ships to even out the losses. And you have even fewer CV/CVEs than I did and the KB could have more CVs than I faced as well; it's not a battle you want to fight.

On the other hand, in a prior game, three USN CV wiped out KB while covering an invasion, losing only one.  There's lots of variables at play, with many out of one's control.
 
I've been on the wrong side of luck in this game, so I don't want to push it.  I'm still sore about not splattering KB with my battleships earlier.
 
Everyone's moving via the New Zealand route, and nobody's been spotted, so all's well so far.  I'm uncertain what kind of reach his search planes at Noumea have.
 
I need more fighters in the Samoa area.  I have roughly half a dozen SBD squadrons there, but the escorts available won't cut it if he makes a move.  My fight at Ceylon is highlighting that nicely.  When the Jugs arrive, things should improve.  I have two B-24 squadrons there, which I plan to ship out.  I need the ramp space.  More base forces and Seabees are also loading up.  I'm thinking about getting a network built up near Tahiti, but I'm wondering if that's desperate overkill.

CF seems to have switched focus to Madras. The bombers came from the east, so it remains to be seen if he's starting a serious offensive here or if it's just our tit for tat raids.

My -1P Liberators have been starting to check out what's on the Jimas. Paramushiro-Jima appears to have 10,660 troops there, as well as a good sized fighter squadron present. Some assorted ships are in harbor, too. I'll be moving down the line to check each one out. It is a bit rich for what I've got I've got in the area (about a division worth).

I've been losing track of time. Essex arrived in Balboa today. Once she's on map, I'll send a bunch of destroyers to escort he into Pearl. In the next 2.5 months, one Essex and three Independence CV/CVLs will be showing up at Panama. Probably 2-3 more fleet ships before year's end, which means I can't go hog wild yet.

Over the next four days, two more fulled up P-47 squadrons arrive in Eastern USA. Two more of P-38Gs will also arrive in Charter Towers. After the Madras bashing, I'll be flipping USAAF squadrons in India to Jugs as fast as possible. It looks like must of my Suva disbandees will be arriving in San Fran in 10 days.

The lead CVE TF leading the carrier mob got spotted by a Glen and are at 1/1 detection level. I did splash the Glen. They're 10 hexes NW of New Zealand. His carriers are about 4 hexes S of Suva apparently heading west. They're basically just standing off the island at this point. No idea if he'll give chase or not. If he heads this way, I'll hide within the USN/USMC air umbrella I have at NZ.

What do your pilots look like? I think part of the issue is insufficient numbers of planes you have on CAP. Surely you have some other short ranged interceptors that can't find work outside of guarding bases like this?

I've mentioned before that I think that the Kuriles could be the key to victory for you. You've been pushed back many places but not the NorPac. But if you go after it it requires a complete dedicated effort on your part and you'd need to shift a lot of resources out here.

The lead CVE TF leading the carrier mob got spotted by a Glen and are at 1/1 detection level. I did splash the Glen. They're 10 hexes NW of New Zealand. His carriers are about 4 hexes S of Suva apparently heading west. They're basically just standing off the island at this point. No idea if he'll give chase or not. If he heads this way, I'll hide within the USN/USMC air umbrella I have at NZ.

Hiding under an air umbrella isn't the way to go. Even with some LBA those CVEs will get crushed. Best bet is to escape in the open ocean and get that detection down. KB can't attack a target it can't find. Until early 44 that's the best defense you have against the KB.

I'm not sure offhand what the skills were and will check later.  They' weren't raw.  With my training regimen, the pools are filled with 60+ pilots.  I've only sent 1-2 aces stateside for training at this stage.  A neat thing was at Panama, I requested a veteran for Essex's fighters and was able to assign McCampbell, keeping things historic.
 
I've a division in San Francisco which is only days away from being bought out.  I can think about dedicating them to the north.  Flipping Cochin to a USN command cost a thousand points, so I have to make that up.
 
I was reviewing Japanese losses.  "Officially", Yamato and Haruna are sunk, which is wrong.  Haruna is dead as a side effect from the KB ambush earlier.  I believe both Yamashiros are gone, which should replace the Yamato stat.
 
Hopefully, he'll lose contact with my carriers, since I killed the floatplane.  Moving at CVE speed keeps the progress slow.  The CVE TF leading the bunch is set to max react with a very aggressive admiral in charge -- my thought being that if he comes at me, I want to close the distance quickly.  All my carrier mishaps involved getting struck at max range with little ability to retaliate.  To review, I have two 4 CVE TFs, one 3 CV group (two fast battleships and a CLAA are with these), and the remaining BBs, with heavy escort in the last bunch.  One of the CVEs flipped to Hellcats before everyone departed, so hopefully they'll get healed up fairly quickly.  Probably 6 days to get everyone up.  4 large F6F squadrons can only help things.
 
I believe the SBD-5 and early SB2Cs are coming online now.  I think they're coming in at the 30-40 rate per month, so conversion will be protracted.  I have over 100 SBD-3s in the pool, and I've started converting some of the Kingfisher squadrons over.  I usually keep a tight control on what converts or doesn't convert, as I watch the pools fairly closely.
