Not a happy screen to look at considering the replenishment rate for 2Es is quite low, but then again, this is the target they could hit and they've accomplished 90% of the job already. After this there will be plenty of time to rest and get these re-organized and fleshed out.

I've sent half of the 4Es to India to aim at Magwe oil. The night strikes had no effect yesterday, but I'll see them going to see what happens. There is a big CAP there of about 50 A6M2. I'm also going to start prepping a few units for Moulmein! [:'(]

Looks like 40% of those A6M2 losses are due to Ops - which suggests he has been using them a lot for LRCAP or escort for strikes at max fighter range. The losses may not be greatly exaggerated.

I'd thought it was a combination average of the two together. Hmmmmm. I know it's subject to FOW but usually when I see 98% there will be no flights that day. So, I'll just have to be more careful. [:)]

I agree, it looks like he's wearing them out, and those airframes are not durable, so when in combat, and with what seem to be not the top pilots they began with, they suffer more than I'd expect. I can't wait for the hurricane Iic to arrive. Of course the Tojo will be around soon too and that will change the picture dramatically. The Tojo will hurt us, but it's range limits it in an offensive role.

The A6M line doesn't get remarkably better until the A6M5, and that should still be a little ways off. Oscars are Oscars. It's the George and Jack and Frank that will change the air war.

That is one reason I'm pushing so hard now. With DBB settings for AA, the Japanese will struggle to do anything with their air superiority if we have a lot of territory with a lot of good AA defending it. [:)]

Well, this is the turn when we both happened to go all-in on the same hand! [&o]

Fireworks aplenty, and although it's costly, I think the Allies came out the better for the risk today.


it started with our 3 USN CAs tackling 4 IJN DDs near Palembang. He seems to always lead with DDs and manage to get them in from of the big boys. This time it didn't really work out, as Shiratsuya took the brunt of the 8 inch shells and went under, with only one hit on DD Le Triomphant to bother the Allies.

I'd set up the TFs so that the SCTFs would react to protect the bombardment TFs, but I'm actually glad now it didn't work completely as planned, since the USN hit the IJN CAs first and showed their quality and accumulated experience in this one. These are battle hardened crews, veterans of the long battle for the DEI, and they held their own against superior and better opponents in this first decisive battle of the night.

John Shaffroth led the USN through this and crossed he T here to inflict catastrophic damage on CA Tone, from which she would not recover. [&o]

Le Triomphant unfortunately also takes some direct hits form the IJN 20cm guns, and ends the battle floundering.

The RN CAs get into it next and cripple the Kinugasa with 6 hits. The ships from Batavia hit the DDs next and sink Nenohi before moving into Palembang for a daytime bombardment.

In the final act of the night phase, the RN CLs deliver a solid bombardment at Palembang, which makes me feel better after the USN didn't make it.

In the day phase limited air strikes go for some of the surviving DDs. The Yamagumo takes a 250kg bomb and Albacore's try to finish her, but can't get a hit.

The Canberra TF does make it to Palembang for a daytime bombardment, and luckily no IJN CVs are left in range to cause trouble.
