THEY WERE EXPENDABLE: PT BOATS TAKE ON IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY
Posted: Sat Aug 15, 2015 3:58 pm
Sardaukar...thanx for posting the excerpt from the rule book.
8/6-8/7/45
SUBS
SS S-53 is sunk by E boats near Ominato.
SS I-55 is sunk by an Allied ASW TF off Chichi-jima.
SS I-166 is sunk by carrier escorts near Torishima.
SS ShCh sinks an IJN LST off Niigata.
SS RO-103 puts 2 torpedoes in CVL Unicorn and is sunk in return by the carrier escorts near Torishima.
SS Golet sinks E No.44 off Kushiro.
SAC
The B-29s excecute a day light manpower raid at 13,000' over Yokohama. With the B-29Bs flying at normal range I was
expecting a really big firestorm but the max fire was only 246,000. At least there was still a level 100,000 fire
burning at the end of the turn. The Allies have now scored 28,596 strategic points.
Next turn I will use the B-29s at 6000' over Yokohama in a night manpower attack. Then all the torpedo bombers of
Fifth Fleet will launch a daytime manpower attack at 13,000' over Yokohama.
FIFTH FLEET: THEY WERE EXPENDABLE
With BB Yamashiro and multiple IJN CAs on the loose all Allied combatant ships left at Miyake-jima that could still
make steam were withdrawn to rendezvous with the carriers of Fifth Fleet off Torishima.
All that remained at Miyake-jima to face the Imperial Japanese Navy were USN PT boats since they were
expendable.
Fotunately....there was only 3% moonlight and with the overcast conditions maximum visibility was only 2000 yards.
The PT boats radars picked up the onrushing IJN surface TFs at 8000 yards and the resultant combat at 2000 yards was
like a knife fight:

SS I-166 is sunk by carrier escorts near Torishima.
