At least two, but possibly as many as four game starts I've had them hit battleships in Pearl Harbor. On at least one occasion - and in that game it also occurred on a restart after a couple of turns (different opponent) - the single hit from an SSX actually sank the battleship outright! Walter has used them to make attacks on (IIRC) Suva and Auckland. Auckland several times, actually. Maybe Sydney too, I forget*.

* Must keep ASW and AM forces on guard at ports!

Wow, we certainly have had to very different experiences! [:)] Erik will probably correct me if I´m wrong but I think he has still to hit something with them.
Most of those other attacks failed (I think one hit something minor), but the Devious One keeps me on my toes!

No ground combat in China, but Imperial forces have attained some new positions. Two units have finished moving cross country to the left south/western end of the defensive line west of Kweiyang. Other units have repositioned within the Chungking plain, and one has moved onto the road WNW of Sian against a large number of Chinese units that are repositioning westward. Three units have made it to the road midway between Chungking and Kweiyang. Basically the Chinese units in each hex of the line have their backs against the wall. A failure in any hex is very bad now.

Our attack in Burma went well, inflicting many more casualties than the final odds alone would indicate.

Most of our units have disruption in the low teens, but the attack will continue tomorrow. two brigades will make it to the plain tomorrow, 1 hex and 2 hexes west of Shwebo. The 2nd British Division is being bombed heavily, both disrupting it and slowing its movement. As more units get onto the plain that will be less effective.

All of the 1st Fiji Commando Bn is on Kusaie Island, except the combat engineers, which will not air drop. An APD TF is leaving Nauru with supply tonight and another will leave tomorrow with the engineers. While before there were many ships in port at Kwajalein, the raid caused the egress of those that survived. 2 x SSX are seen by recon, so the B-24 will visit tomorrow.

The Horn Island invasion is loaded up although they have been spotted. They and their escorts will set off. The Dutch will patrol to the west of the objective while the Commonwealth cruisers and USN destroyers provide close cover. CAP will be courtesy of LBA. We'll see if DAW HQ is planning to strike.

Continuous recon is showing 2 units and more troops at Lunga, 1,240 troops, 8 guns and 0 AFV. There is a chance that one regiment will not be enough, so the prepped tank Bns will load up on LST and head that way in case. Russell Islands airfield is now size 1, and sports Corsairs and P-40K.

Are you going to abandon the Central planes and withdraw towards the mountains? Looking at GJ/Q-balls game even without supply GJ doesn´t seem to be able to clear out the mountains. Might be a better option to withdraw there then die in the open?

If I have to I will. But I'm not going willingly! I figure - hope - that I already have enough in the mountains and such that I won't need more there. So if I hold those three or four cities on the plain as tenaciously as I can that adds to Walter's burden. If he can clear out the plain then things get easier for him.

With my offensive underway in Burma I really do not want to voluntarily free up any of his troops in China. It's likely that he will hold on to the Burma road with the last breath of many Imperial units in Burma. So, I will take advantage by moving to the south and not waste effort there. I'll grab as much of Burma and Thailand as I can before running out of steam. The order of the day is to move before defenses are in place, cutting off and destroying units as possible.

Imperial units that are bottled up in northern Burma and east of the plain (~Lashio) are out of place and can rot until a convenient time to deal with them. So far that looks like at least 5 regiments, plus the units across the border into China. Let them stay out of play while my units concentrate and smash the units in front of them.

That's the current plan. [:)]

We'll continue attacking. It looks like most units that made it to Magwe have now fled south via the rail line. There are now 2 units there with 4,100 troops and 15 guns.

The Horn Island assault force is on site and will begin unloading. The 31st Infantry Rgt is embarked on landing craft and should unload all at once. LRCAP protecting the landing intercepted Imperial transports in the air.

The Lunga assault force is four hexes out but they have been spotted and so will go straight in.

Our raiders shot the gap and are now in view of the Eye of Mordor with DL 10/10. They found nothing but at least they have done some advertising.

The rest of the 1st AmphTrac Engr Bn was unwittingly left behind. They will be picked up and moved forward ASAP.

There was some interesting Intel gleaned from contacts during turn resolution. Our submarines made four attacks that revealed the movement of Imperial ships. One, an AS north of the Marshalls (AS Yasukuni Maru seen hit by a torpedo but no damage noted). I presume that one is moving away from the danger area. Another was on a convoy between Ponape and Truk, attacked twice. I presume that Ponape is hastily being reinforced. A third was on an AO between Truk and Rabaul, but much closer to Truk. That one is more interesting. Is fuel needed at Rabaul? For routine operations? For movement of troops? For naval combat operations? The AO could even be meant to serve warships at sea after high-speed operations.

Shortlands, Munda, and Tulagi airfields are shut down. The NZ Fiji Bde and support troops begin loading to seize and set up a base at Rekata Bay. When they are ready, the Battle Fleet will cover the operation. Rekata Bay is undefended and can only be approached from the east/north side, so at least the Imperial subs should be most or all out of position. It is also far enough away from Rabaul that if IJN carriers choose to act they will have little if any LBA help.

In Burma Myitkyina has now been abandoned by the Empire and will be occupied tomorrow. the troops SE of Akyab will rest one more day before attacking. SigInt says a fresh division is headed to Rangoon on board ship (the 9th). I think we had a sync problem because the replay showed that a TF of xAKL came under attack at Akyab, resulting in no hits and the loss of 7 x Betties (which usually means closer to 14). But alas, the battle does not appear in the combat report nor in the day's plane losses. Some little electron junior officer is going to pay for inserting a training report into the official Combat Replay stream I tell you!!

Those IJN oilers are now at or near Kavieng.

In return I-7 and I-176 both found and attacked the CVE force near Rennell Island. Both attacks were repulsed with hits on the subs, but the carriers must now move. The attack will continue tomorrow. The first two units have arrived at Magwe, a Bde and a tank Rgt. Another Bde is now on the way to Magwe, another to Mandalay, and the motorized Bde will be diverted to Meiktila (which it is prepped for). Meiktila now scouts as having only 1 unit present. Magwe has 2, Mandalay still has 1, and there is 1 more to the east of Mandalay. Clearly DAW HQ is savvy to avoiding additional forces being stuck away from the vulnerable area to the south.

Tomorrow another Bde and 2 x Div will make it onto the plain. 2nd British Div is about a day away from crossing the river just north of Magwe but is being bombed savagely. Disruption now 88%. Morale is 92%, so apparently they feel sleeping in an extra hour for just one morning will fix everything!

I'm pretty confident that Lunga will be taken in the first attack tomorrow. The 1st AmphTrac Engineer Battalion will not attack. All the 4EB within range will harry the defenders. The 7th Indpt SNLF Coy is no longer at Lunga, so the Empire is definitely flying out troops.

The support forces will move closer in case the attack is a success. The carriers are moving off to support the invasion of Rekata Bay, and possibly Vangunu just after. The fast battleships are on scene as well. Definitely at that point there will be some administrative activity with the fleet, as some CVE and Wasp need to upgrade, there are enough Hellcats available for at least 2 more carrier groups, and several cruisers and destroyers are also due to upgrade.

An APD TF is carrying some combat engineers to Kusaie Island. Another APD TF will deliver a USMC Raider Bn to seize Ontong Java as the Rekata Bay invasion goes in.

The ground attack in Burma went very well and seems like it must achieve a breakthrough tomorrow. I found the 14th Indian Division was set to defend, and I'm not sure if that happened after combat or if I did that by mistake when I was setting a new preparation target. An air bridge for supply from Chittagong to Shwebo is working quite well, with Shwebo up to 2,300 tons of supply. A Japanese units at Bhamo is actually heading SE over the Chinese border and on the road midway between Lashio and Paoshan. I will make no efforts toward opening the road, as mentioned earlier, instead seeking to trap those units and hold them harmless until dealing with them is not a distraction.

Meiktila appears to now be abandoned. The 13th Indian Bde has made Magwe, giving us 2x Inf Bde and 1x Arm Rgt there. 2x CVE have been sighted at Rabaul. 4EB raids from Australia were ordered for Gasmata today but did not fly. They will be left ordered for tomorrow, plus raids (from the south) on Munda and Shortlands. The Battle Fleet and Rekata Bay invasion forces will move to the east of Rekata Bay for invasion the following day. PBY-type aircraft flying near Rabaul continue to take it on the chin, revealing high-quality fighter opposition.

Fierce air action over Burma. Sweeps on both sides and strikes on troops out on the exposed plain by both sides. We did better, knocking down 18 Zeros while the other losses about evened out between the two sides. The heavy strikes might have done it, or perhaps the two divisions moving downstream across the river to cut off their exit, but the Imperial units at Magwe are now moving out. Our two infantry regiments will attack tomorrow.

I guess so. She's gone! We also lost an AM in an ASW battle in the Solomons. In several encounters, though, there were hits made on subs, including one from the air. Over in the Marshalls our 4EB hit Roi-Namur airfield hard, now showing 35% damage.

Our 4EB hit Gasmata pretty well, but we have no recon going there so the results will be a bit mysterious. Our 4EB also kept Shortlands and Munda closed. Surprisingly, they ran into a few Zeros over Munda. Two troop TF are at Lunga commencing to unload engineers and other support troops.

The two CVE TF of the Battle Fleet have been seen, but no one else. The Fiji Bde will hit the beach at Rekata bay tomorrow. Here is a look at the area.

Air battles over Burma were quite intense, with the Hurricane IIc Trop models of No.30 Sqn RAF at Shwebo smashing their way through Imperial formations of fighters and bombers alike. By the end of the day they had lost 2 Hurricanes against a likely total of about 2 dozen attacking fighters and bombers! Throw in more losses to Allied fighter sweeps and well over thirty Imperial flying machines landed for the last time on Burmese soil.

The situation on the ground in Burma is changing rapidly. One of our regiments has arrived at Mandalay (although prepped for Lashio), and a motorized regiment has arrived at Meiktila, which is undefended. It looks like there are 6 Imperial units at Taung Gyi, which is an objective to block IJA units in northern Burma from timely moving south. Meiktila will be seized tomorrow. The troops at Magwe need to rest. At Mandalay our unit will attack, aided by some bomber support which will be diverted there. Two armored units and an infantry unit have made the plain northwest of Shwebo and are racing to the area of action.

Tomorrow two armored units will roll into Port Hedland into the domain of an unknown enemy unit. They are the ones that came through Corunna Downs after coordinating with the commandos. Another armored unit is about 150mi to the west, with infantry and HQ support another 100mi behind them.

Troops are ashore at undefended Rekata Bay. Lunga airfield is now in business at size 1 as two P-40E squadrons transfer there. Loads of support troops landed there today and more are on the way, so base building should move right along. As soon as the airfield hits size 2 both fighter squadrons will put LRCAP over nearby Tulagi.

Here is a look at Burma. You can see a defensive line being set up in the jungle to the south. We will have to go through/around that, which is part of the reason for punishing those units in front of our advance while cutting off those astride it.

Yes, engage the enemy more closely!!  By cracking skulls in the open plains, there may be a notable shortage of LYBs to bedevil you in the jungle to the south and west and at Rangoon.  Tallyho, the fox is on the run!

Today was somewhat tough in the air over Burma, though, as 5 x B-17 were lost, 4 to ops causes. The assault on Mandalay will continue tomorrow. Still only one Bde is ready to attack at Magwe. 2nd British Division will arrive tomorrow, and while also highly disrupted (33%), will add enough weight that a general attack will be made. There are 13 units at Taung Gyi, a size 4 airbase. We will invest it when sufficient forces are available. Meanwhile recon will commence. Max stacking at Taung Gyi is 45,000, so it's possible that the Empire will stack forces there for a counter-attack. Our strategy will remain to drive south. By cutting the road and seizing Toungoo, Pegu, Rangoon, and Moulmein if we can get it, Imperial troops in this region will be relegated to getting supply via the interior road and by air lift.

The armour attacks at Port Hedland tomorrow. Only one unit is scouted there on defense, and bombing revealed it as the 15th Ind.Art.Mortar Battalion.

Rekata bay was seized. But continuing a (now) tradition for the USMC Raiders in this game, Ontong Java turns out to be well defended!

The meager remnants of the Bn are being lifted off the beach post haste.

As soon as the carriers are freed from the Rekata Bay operation, three more fighter squadrons will upgrade to Hellcats. Then the Vangunu operation will commence at once. When Vangunu is captured, the division slated for Munda will land there and march to Munda. Coincident with that landing, Torokina will be seized from the air by Australian commandos, after which the forces prepped for Shortlands will land and begin marching. That will be a good point for an operational break, when Wasp and the CVE scheduled for upgrade will retire, as will the various cruisers due for refit & upgrade.

Fierce battles in the air over Burma. Taung Gyi is the major forward air base for the Empire. The B-17, B-25, and Wellingtons will rest a day from their troop strikes and the day after tomorrow will make a concerted strike on Taung Gyi. P-40K squadrons will rest as much as possible (emergency defensive intercepts only) and sweep Taung Gyi in support.

We have our first look at Truk. Battleships and more in harbor there, but few aircraft and about 15,000 troops. Hmm... [:)]

A series of non or lightly escorted strikes on our TF at Akyab was intercepted with good effect. That TF is on its way to Ramree Island, so defending it over Akyab is a bonus. P-38 sweeps and 4EB strikes on Finschhafen, combined with action over Burma, meant that in spite of the losses on board Chenango we did quite well in the air.

There seems to be lots of traffic around Truk, as seen by our subs as it passes during turn resolution (seen in the turn replay but not at turn end). In fact AO Toei Maru was taken down by Drum near Satawal. There is a CV in a TF at Kavieng, and several TFs of unknown composition NE of Kavieng, at Kavieng, at Rabaul, and SE Rabaul.

Our carriers are away from the current sub sightings and are all heading for Noumea as planned.

Looks like you are in for some push-back in the Ontong Java/Shortlands/Munda region. Is he capable of mounting a counter-invasion with your carriers away?
