Let's see if two units move out of Katherine this next turn. Our B-17's are doing a great job of slowing them down.

Question : Have you identified the source of the CAP over Katherine ?

4 Zero's and 1 Nick you post above
KB2 for the Zero's and Katherine for the Nick's. I just can't see anywhere else possible. Wyndham and Derby are size 1 airbases so they should not be able to provide LRCAP and Broome is 15 hexes from Katherine. True we don't see any aircraft icon at Katherine but we have no recon and our forces in contact there (prior to just now) got beat up upon being ejected.

Derby seems too far away / Wyndham does show any spotting of an airfield although that could be a search deficiency. Katherine itself seems bereft of any air base.
Broome is size 3 IIRC; the others are size 1. Fenton of course shows as a dot because it has no base constructed.

Honorable opponent must be taking atrocious losses operationally in addition to air losses.
When I have cited a day's losses those have been total losses for the model/type. Once in a while something lost over china or during a transfer might show up in those numbers but I have no way of knowing that (unless I see a fighter show down by flak over China). Because the air action is very limited right now I think those daily losses over Katherine are pretty accurate. When action elsewhere heats up we'll be left guessing about what multiplier to apply to the combat reports.

In terms of investment facing the same situation you wonder if it is worth it trying to extract those troops ?
Do you mean the Empire extract the ground troops? He is in no danger of having any troops cut off at this time if that's what you mean. For combat units on the ground in NW Australia he has at minimum a division, two infantry regiments, and a tank regiment. I am pretty sure he landed at least another regiment over the docks.

Recall I pulled all but the fortress (of whatever it's called in this case) out of Darwin. Even a regiment should have no trouble assaulting the base overland. Even a seaborne assault would do fine except for losses due to the guns. He also has plenty of combat power to get through those very inexperienced Australian tank regiments to get to Wyndham, Derby, or Broome. We are a long way from endangering those units with isolation.

Supply might be different. A couple of turns ago our armour cut the road to Wyndham, surely reducing supply flow from there. It will be a while until we can menace Wyndham but what we have done so far should help. What of supply at Katherine? We left very little but I wonder if a plug of supply made it in from Windham after the Empire captured Katherine?

Best case scenario: the Imperial division and tank regiment move out of Katherine next turn. Our armour then speeds in while the B-17's focus on the regiment defending Katherine. We attack and evict the regiment, capturing supply. Not terribly likely because our armour bearing down on Katherine is Exp 35, but it could happen with the horde of B-17's all hitting the infantry regiment for 3 days in a row. Of course he could also send the tank regiment back across the river to aid the defense just as quickly as our armour roars in.

Once those units move they can be hit but with only half the bomb load. I certainly will do that but I prefer to capture Katherine first. There are two or perhaps three more small units I haven't bought out. Some of what you see (plus the others) combine into larger units, so that might have thrown off your memory.

• Although I had hoped the infantry would retreat to force a later battle the destruction of both defenders was the most likely outcome. The surprise here was the infantry regiment accompanied the division; apparently there will be no defense of Katherine by the Empire, at least not with forces now in the vicinity.

• The Imperial tanks at Katherine continue to show movement NW; with all the Imperial infantry across the river our two nearby armour units are moving in as fast as possible; the B-17's will recalibrate to ensure all target the armoured unit still in Katherine. Maybe we can give them a bloody nose.

• At Port Hedland is a 3-ship TF with 1x CS; just passing Broome heading west is a 6-ship convoy with 2x CA, 2x APD, 2x xAP.

• It looks like the Empire is counting on an easy capture of Darwin (a good bet) and supplying/evacuating via sea. After we liberate Katherine fighter support for their forces closing on Darwin will primarily be from KB2. With KB2 promised to be tethered to the coast for even longer we have dispatched additional subs to hunt carriers. Some left yesterday but with today's developments all remaining long range subs at Brisbane have sortied and several subs already on patrol have been re-tasked.

• That IJA 8th Tank Regiment has left Katherine and crossed the river. As you see above our two battered armoured units were both attacked from the air and so was one of our fresh armoured units (west of Katherine) too. So, I backtracked an searched, and last known location of the KB1 was on 29th of may. With a heavy volume radio at truk on the 3rd of june. So, a month ago in-game.

What do you make of it? It seems a very, VERY long time without using KB1 considering that 1942 is the last year where he truly has carrier superiority.

Do you really think he might be laying in wait, ready to ambush your carriers? Or... something else? India perhaps? No other place is far enough to justify such a long absence. And yes he does have upgrades but... is Andav the type to stop operations in order to carry them out immediately?

Agreed, if he is taking the time to assemble his amphibs and combat TFs that might be a good time to upgrade the CVs. IJN players dread their weak AA when going up against Allied aircraft after mid 1942.

Drakanel means a month from last sighting until current game time.

Walter is very strategically minded: he does not need to be 'doing something' with the major fleet elements all the time. When you look at it strategically, waiting to pounce on the first Allied invasion to destroy the only USN fleet carriers available through the first 1/3 of '43 is doing something.

Is he upgrading carriers right now?

Is he waiting to pounce?

Is he preparing some invasions in SoPac to delay the Allies' advance?

Is he waiting for major LCU's to finish recovering before launching an invasion of NE India?

And on and on...

Walter might do some point-grabbing adventures very deliberately, but not impulsively. Even though I know he landed more combat LCU in Australia than have shown their faces near Katherine the total amount I got to see is pretty minor. Is Perth invasion coming? Ceylon?

I haven't kept track, but when was the last big bastion on Java taken? I didn't look at unit names, but there were more units in China a while after that. Strategically, the earlier he can take all of China the better. Recall last game I was able to hold the mountains and doing so tied up IJA units which might have defended elsewhere.

Walter plans long term. He certainly is willing to throw in short term-only ops to keep you off balance but that is also part of the long term.

That early CV upgrade is for air radar...and probably super super important if there are any clashes with Allied CVs.

The Agano (CL) can be accelerated to get some more air radar.

The July upgrades add a bit of AA, but really it is the radar that is a must have.
