Can someone please explain a (hopefully) simple concept to a newbie. How do I know how much money I have in the national treasury. Is this explained in the rules somewhere?

If you mean how much gold does your country have? Click on economy then click the trade tab. Monthly gold income is listed as one of the commodities and below that your total gold is listed.

Another quick route is by pressing p taking you to a screen detailing information/resources for each of the powers.
[:(]Oops sorry - just realised that you were after monthly money stats too which isn't here. The money figure in p will simply reflect the overall total as already shown in the money resource icon at the bottom of the main strategic map screen. Re the latter screen left clicking anywhere along that bottom line of resource totals will tab between the cumulative total for each resource and the monthly income.

or just click on the icons showing you how much of each resource you're gaining each turn and the display will switch to showing you how much you have. Particularly useful for keeping track of textiles.
