Those KV-1s are tough nuts to crack.
Especially for those little 50mm guns.

Boy, they sure are!
What makes the KV-1 doubly effective in the overall game is that it and the T-34 are defending so much of the time. When a German vehicle advances into position to get a shot at one, it's often times its last, given the disparity in weight of armour and gun.
All in all, it's a very humbling experience.

It appears that there are shells stuck in the armor where the front and side armor meet. Those glancing blows off the sides show very tight shot groups. It looks like they were using that tank for zeroing the weapon?

Either that, or they could have been testing the vehicle's penetration qualities.

Perhaps. If a shot group could be that tight, it should have been 'walked' into the gap between the turret and hull.
There appears to be at least 3 shells stuck in the armor. Amazing

More like they were going for the turret ring. Might have been tank(s) or AT guns shooting at the tank.
The shots are at an odd angle so not much could be gained from test shooting.

Well, zeroing was mentioned. Using a dead tank as a target to adjust one's gun. The close shot groups would indicate something like 500 meters or less.

I noticed there is a problem with the KV-1. I can use all 3 of its DP machine guns. One is at the back of the turret pointing in the opposite direction of the others.
Probably this should have 2 for use against an enemy. The third could just automatically fire self defense any infantry that comes within 100m or so of the rear of the turret.
