Italian and Western front. Rules question

Hi guys,
Im right now playing a PBEM and we have reached January 1943 and the African front just collapsed. The front had at the time of imploding the strength of 2500 and the allies had only 2000. Howcome the front collapsed even though the axis strength was higher? Will this happen to the western front as well? Is it any point for having any troops in the Italian front from now on?
Kind regards,
Magnus N

Hi Magnus,
I assume you must have had a clear weather turn, which I didn't know could happen in January. If this happened in snow/blizzard/(and mud, I believe?), could you send me the file so I can check it out? Anyway, starting in 1943, the Axis strength is reduced to one third if outside the Italian mainland to reproduce the loss of sea lanes that happened. This will pretty much guarantee a loss in North Africa during the year. If you keep having events in the Italian front, you will lose the game. Also, the weaker the Italian front when an even happens, the sooner the next one can happen. Thus, you do not want to leave the front weak as it will accelerate and guarantee events, leading to a loss of the game in 1943 or 1944.

Rick,
Is the reduction of the African front reflected in the points showing when you rightklick on the front or is this something you just "have" to know as the german player entering 1943?

Magnus,
I think it depends on the version. I am almost positive you get a message in the later versions that says the strength is reduced, but I need to check it. Of course, I do not have a turn ready to test this with right now, but if I can get track one down, I can tell further. I got your file, but need the password, so if you get me that, could you also let me know what scenario and WIR version you are playing?
