Is your laptop a Compaq? Those machines and some others have a problem where the video BIOS is not 100% compatible with the EGA/VGA standard and this results in scrambled fonts in places. If this is the problem the only solution is getting a BIOS update from the laptop maker, and that assumes they admit a compatibility problem exists and have a fix for it.

Don't know what else to tell you. If its the font problem that's so common, then its an unavoidable hardware problem. This has nothing to do with fonts under Windows. The game relies on hardware fonts that are supposed to be in ROM. If they aren't, then any old game that relies on EGA ROM fonts won't work, like WiR. See if Gateway has any Video BIOS updates for that model. If its modern, the BIOS will probably be in FLASH ROM, so an update is easy to distribute. Ask their tech support if that model has any known compatibility problems with the EGA/VGA standard, including providing all required fonts in ROM. Other than that, you're probably out of luck, getting another laptop is probably not an option right?

Sorry.
WiR requirements are pathetically small. Any machine of the last decade (with 100% compatible EGA/VGA) can run it.
