No mater how many conferences or division you have in a league, the schedule generated will put them all in to a round robin pool. So the game sets up a round robin schedule based on number of weeks of the season, there is no restriction set so that teams will only play teams in their own division or conference. That is something you would have edit manually.
This is for the next release.

Schedule creation has been simplified to a round robin system in order to get it to work more effectively. In the future, that may change.
I have posted quite a bit of information on schedules in the private forum. I have posted formulas that would be needed in the creation of complex schedules. If I knew how to program well, I'd just create a schedule program myself, but as variables are added, it become more difficult and time consuming.
Most football computer games have templates for schedules. Many just have one NFL template. That is relatively simple to do. Maximum-Football allows many differing leagues, and that makes scheduling much more complex. In order to match that complexity, Maximum Football would either need to have a complex program that would generate and seed a schedule or a program that would allow saved templates that can be loaded for league after creation.
I don't believe David wants to take the time to program a multiphase complex schedule generator, so I am hoping that the ability to save and load templates will be enabled in the future. The round robin schedule generator is better than what was in the game at release, but it is really a stop gap measure until it can be improved for a later release. I would have to believe that it would be on the to-do list for Release 4, but it isn't up to me. I do know that David is aware of the current shortcomings and would like to improve it.

OK thanks to you both for imfo , think i`ll just make 2 leagues then 1960 afl , and 1960 nfl . Better that way , just would`t do to have dallas texans of 60 playing the packers or giants in a season . Get those set up maybe just start another in future for 1970 and beyond . Then again hey might still be fun to have intra league play back then and just play season after season till today . . Thanks again .

May i make a suggestion.Make the league file United Football Leagues or something like that.Have an AFL conference and a NFL Conference put in the players you want.
Then make a NFL file and a AFL file players not import just used to make the schedule. Use the game to generate the schedule in each file then edit in the UFL file.

Ok make the main file I used United Football Leagues as an example.Make all the AFL and NFL players in it.Since both AFL and NFL teams in the same folder the schedule will be more intigrated with NFL playing AFL.
So just make two other leagues NFL60 with just the NFL teams in it .Make a AFL60 with the AFL teams the game will make schedules for the two files write them down on paper then edit the UFL file with the combined schedules of the NFL60 and AFL60 using access. So each conference has a game generated schedule with no crossovergames till the Superbowl.

Also since you are just using the NFL60 and AFL60 files to make the schedule you don`t need to worry about having the right players with the right teams .Only in the UFL would you need to worry about that.
