I noticed on the unit symbols some strange symbols and that some of my tanks were seperated. I looked through the manual and could not find anything about this? Is this due to experience and abilities? Also does anyone have a good sheet of information for beginners on grasping the game.

Please post a screenshot (on this thread) of what you have seen with the unit icons, it´s a bit hard to tell what you are reffering to.  Also, read the strategy notes inthe game manual, these will help guide you through some of the basics.  Also, try a PBEM game with a decent player, make it clear to your opponent that you want feedback, someone will probably volunteer to take you on and point out what´s going on.  Good Luck and have fun!

Thanks , for the advice. Attached are two pictures the one is a sub with what looks like 2 torpedoes in the lower right? I guess this could be some kind of weapons advance ? Also on other picture are tanks one has a sideways figure 8 in the corner and i am confused on the icons as to what each number location means? I looked throught the manual and could not find a page showing the icons explaining them? Thanks in advance.

OK, The sub icon shows that it is 1 unit, (upper left corner) and that it has 8 movement points remaining (upper right corner) the torpedo symbols show how many "shots" you have left before you need to resupply your torpedo stock, you´ll need to hit the supply button on the left of the screen to do this, putting it in port is not enough.  Note that for each time you attack, the torpedoes will decrease by 1.  Currently you have two shots left.  If you do not attack, the sub will still op-fire at units passing over it, even when it is out of torps.
The tank:
There is a sort of infinity symbol cocked diagonally, my guess is that you have somehow loaded this onto a transport, there must be a port in the region of the tank.  You will note that the number in the center of the symbol has the same number as the transport´s infinity symbol.
The same symbols appear when you load supplies or a paratroop into a heavy bomber or for CAGs when they are connected to a carrier.
You probably already know that the oil barrels indicate that these units are in supply.
