Bombers/Recon won't fly planned missions

I've had a good search, gone through all of the checklists for morale/size/HQs/supplies etc but can't seem to fix my problem.
It seems that I can't make my bombers, or recon, fly missions from Cooktown to PNG, but they will attack shipping while set at attack naval. They were doing it for me before (except recon, which has never flown for me for some reason). I'm an experienced enough UV player so I know my way around this stuff pretty well, or at least I thought I did.
I'm flying B17s out of Cooktown. The only thing I can think of that changed is that I unloaded an Air HQ in Townsville around the time the problem started, but I can't be sure it happened straight away. In any event, they still fly against shipping. Oh, my transport plans no longer fly either (they were going great guns before).
Any ideas? Again, I have plenty of supply, and have experimented with transferring them all out, leaving some in, transferring them back etc. Noth'n.....

What size AF is Cooktown? Could be a range issue due to the AF being less than 5.

Have you given your air units specific targets or are they set to "Commander's Descrition"?

AF is 5, and besides, they were bombing just fine before....
'Have you given your air units specific targets or are they set to "Commander's Descrition"?'
I set it to bomb Gilli or whatever, as I did before, press turn and come back to find that they've all gone back to 'Commander's Descretion': after no bombing. It's bloody strange. Again, even my transports don't transport anymore......

Okay, either you didn't really set them to bomb Gili Gili (which we'll assume is not the case here) or you've been bit by a bug. They should not be resetting to Commander's Discretion.
The problem with Commander's Discretion is that units on that setting will only attack very high value targets or targets with Detection Levels so high they know the CO's SSN.

I've got to assume it's a bug. They shouldn't have stopped bombing otherwise, not completely (unless against naval targets). And no recon, not from the outset. Anyone else have any suggestions before I post this in the bug section?

Thanks by the way.

Could that section of the map be set to "Computer Control" by any chance?

Switch Area S (South) REPEAT Area S (South) to Human Control and you'll be fine.
I had this bug reported a long time ago.
Cheers

Two things you might try - one - stand the unit dowm for 1 turn and then try Gili Gili again. The other option is to target another location and see if they can bomb/recon that location. Then try Gili Gili again.
That's mt 2 cents - <grin>.

Already tried standing down/sending to new location or back to gilli option: no luck. And I don't think there's any LR cap over gilli (otherwise they wouldn't take off for naval contacts) as my recons would have flown at some point anyway. I will try the switching area south to computer control and back again and get back to you. Thanks again guys.

Well, there are actually two issues here. The first is the target getting reset to 'Commander's Discretion', which shouldn't be happening.
The second is getting the planes to fly. That is a separate issue. Now since I'm on the road I don't have a copy of my LBA checklist at hand, but there is one rule which basically says that the planes just will not fly basically whenever they don't feel like it. You can do everything right, have the supplies, good weather, perfect morale, etc., and they may just say "no, not today". Its a bullshit rule and the player gets no message or indication when it happens (which often leads to threads like this one) but is by design.

Well I've tried the computer control/human control test: nup didn't work, even the computer didn't get them to fly.
As far as that rule, I wish I knew it so I could work around it. I also wish the rule didn't stop my recon missions from flying. I don't know, maybe it is a bug and I should just get over it.....
I might start a new game, this one was my first with WITP having been a UV player a couple of years ago, it's time I started a serious game from scratch anyway.

Well, the whole point is that you
can't work around it. There is absolutely nothing the player can do to avoid it or reduce the chances of getting hit by it.

Just curious - is this a stock game? If not, could it be a map problem?

I have problems with the game design not launching bombers vs targets all the time, especially naval. The design is a hodgepodge with little real thought put into many aspects it seems. The AI is the worst element of the design, worse than the enemy.

How's your supply situation? Also check out your leaders, particularly the leader of the Air HQ. Make sure your leaders are aggressive (55+).
