How many screens wide?

I generally like to use a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or maybe a bit higher.

1. How many screens wide is the map?

2. How many screens high is the map?

That depends. The world map is a cylinder 360 hexes wide and 195 hexes high, with both poles simply lopped off. There are 8 zoom levels with zoom level 1 having hexes 17w by 19h pixels and Z8 having pixels 136w by 152h. Because of the orientation of the hex grid, each row is effectively 114 pixels high at Z8 (or 14 at Z1). The players will most often use Z4 and Z5 for land and air operations and Z2 and Z3 for naval operations. I haven't done the calculations you ask about for the entire map since rarely does a player want to examine the Atlantic and Pacific oceans simultaneously. Simple division yields:
360 hexes * 17 pixels / 1024 = 6 at Z1
195 hexes * 14 pixels / 768 = 3.6 at Z1

For other levels of zoom, simply multiply by the zoom level.

I have a Dell 24" and I highly recommend it.  It is so bright and clear.  Save up your pennies and nickels and get the 30" if you can.  You won't be disappointed. I can actually hold my own in WWIIonline now with this monitor.

What does a 24" monitor cost? A 30"?

Cheesehead, just go to Dell.com. You'll see many nice monitors and prices (Some reasonable).

That means the map is 70,200 hexes! OUTSTANDING!!! [X(]

I'm currently running 3 x 19" flat pannels on my Mac and only 2 x 17" on my PC.
So, I will probably add a 3rd 17" to my PC.

I just love the wrap-around feel. [:D]

And, yes, I do spoil myself when it comes to my computers. [:'(]

I think I might buy a 24" wide (or more) when MWIF is released. 1920x1200
Maybe even two, if my computer can handle that much. Will make it alott easier to get the whole view of the game.

I have two 19", which is really necesary for development. One shows the game in progress and the other shows the source code listings, variables, data, et al.

I would really like to go to two 24" (or more) too. One of the beta testers has 3 monitors and the screen shots I have seen of that are great. With the detailed map in the center monitor, auxiliary forms (e.g., units under cursor, setup tray) and the global map can be positioned on the left and right monitors.

Back in the 1980's, I had this vision of a flat panel monitor (5' by 4'), that is built right into the top of an adjustable table. By adjustable, I mean that the back of the table can be levered to set the table top any angle you want, from flat to vertical. My father owned a table like that for making engineering drawings and it was really nice to use. Perhaps someday I'll see something comparable for sale.

I use screen shots as my screen background - so that I am always reminded of MWIF regardless of what I am doing.

I just updated my screen shots adding 5 of them: Med, Japan, Philippines, NEI, and Africa. That way I can switch different ones in and out. Here is a slightly trimmed version of the NEI screen background. I had to trim it to get it under the 500 kb limit Matrix imposes on my embedded pictures.

As you can see, this is two screens wide (2560 by 1024). So are all the others; and I'll send them to anyone who is interested, just send me your email (since they are too big for me to upload to the forum).

I was trying to assemble a single bitmap from Iceland to Africa, Azores to the Aral Sea, but HyperSnap choked on the file size. Right now I have 18 pieces, which once assembled will be close to 5000 pixels wide by 8800 pixels high. But I don't know how to assemble it.[&:] If someone has any ideas, please let me know.

The purpose behind this task is that my brother-in-law can arrange to print large bitmaps (JPG) for me. The person he knows prints out large pictures (JPG) on canvas that is mounted on the sides of buses for advertising. I want to see if he can print the whole MWIF map on a single sheet of canvas. This slice of the world is a trial run - which is off in the ditch at the moment.

Fantastic mental image: Wif map on the side of a bus. Love it.

Do you think Matrix will pay for it out of their marketing budget? :-)

The first task is to prove that this can be done, which means figuring out the mechanics of the process.

Photoshop is the way to go for that.
I assembled the whole MWiF map (67 MB JPG file, 29,250 x 11,150 pixels large) with that, but this was with the old without coastlines map. I made it from zoom 4 screenshots. Which zoom are your screenshots ?
If you want, I can join your file into a bigger one.

Thanks, I'll send you what I have so far. I do not own a copy of Photoshop.

These are all zoom level 3, which to me seems easy to read and examine. I haven't figured out how big they will be when they are printed.

I don't remember.

I am sure that I send those people that asked a current copy of some of the graphics. But many map details have changed since 2007. They have been pretty stable since 2009.

As for printing the map, the one quote I got was very expensive and not viable even in a lot of 100. Matrix was going to look into finding a cheaper printer but that drifting off the table and out of sight (as far as I know). Printing maps is not really what Matrix Games is all about.
