Ok...you've got my attention...so sell me!

What it it, how does it play? I see screenies of interceptors flying over land...can you go from space to land and back? Is it turn based then realtime or just realtime? Strategy or fps?

I will of course go and look at the website more, but fill your boots on replying if you want. [;)]

Realtime. Once the campaign starts the clock never stops moving forward. You begin as a fighter/bomber pilot and as your mission count accumulates you will be promoted to capital ship command. Medals can be earned for exceptional conduct. Your average mission might have you destroying a minefield or striking a cruiser. In addition to space combat you will also be deployed to strike planetary targets.

Game is simulation first and strategy comes second. Player can fly fighter like in typical fighter combat simulations in air and in space.

Strategy comes to play when player is in control of large starship. He can use radio to instruct other starships and more precise controls to command other ships below his chain of command. If player happens to command carrier, he is at top of the chain and can command any ships and any fighters as he likes.

Game is decent simulation but not very good strategy. Campaigns are dynamic, and that deserves one point. I'm talking about older Starshatter 4.5 here, version number of Starshatter: Gathering Storm is 5.0 (unless it's been updated).
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

Thx for responses.....it looks interesting.

Quick question - how is the transition from space to surface performed? Do you hit a point on the way down where the game pauses and then loads you on the surface, or do you actually fly through space and down onto the surface?

The camera drops into third person and you see your ship fall away. It then pickups as you enter upper atmosphere.

Just remember: simulation is steak and strategy is dessert. If simulation don't belong to your repertoire, Starshatter isn't for you.

No worries there....I have plenty of sims on my hard disk! I have a feel for all types of game. But thx for pointing that out anyway. If I had been looking for more strategy based, then I may well have beene dissappointed.
