Considerations

Hi all,
All of the information seems a bit much for me to digest.
I am seriously considering buying ANW but wonder how stable and dependable it is.
What are the standard updates and arrangements for ANW? What are players using? Are there things to avoid?
Regards John

The game version 3.7.0 released will function, in general. There's a whole litany of problems that have been found, but it does work, marginally.
You can take a look at a partial list of the
Known Harpoon 3.7 [ANW] Issues.
If you are wanting to try MP,
DO NOT install the Beta Patch 3.7.1 or it will result in your game crashing every single MP session.
The game does have a number of significant improvements over Harpoon 2. IMO, it is also improved over the Harpoon3 version even if it does introduce some new bugs.
I don't understand what you mean by, "standard updates and arrangements". As of this date, no official patches have been released. The only official release is the v3.7.0 and that is the one you purchase.

Hi Hermanhum,
Thank you very much for the quick reply. I had wondered about updates and you have answered my question.
By arrangements I mean, are there particular database's or mods that are commonly in use.
Regards John

The game is still relatively new since its release on June 14, 2006, so there really aren't many 'Mods' yet available.
Some (but not all) of the most commonly used Databases are:
PlayersDB
HUD-II
ADB
Colonial WarsDB
DB2k
For your convenience, I've added links to their home sites.

Welcome to the fray. I don't think one can go wrong buying a copy of Harpoon and trying all of the 3rd party DBs. They each bring with them different characteristics and different scenarios.

[doucheycomment]Kewl! What kind of characteristics Tony?[/doucheycomment]
To be real.... the guys put alot of work into their db and tons of great scenarios have come out of it. Don't get to caught up in the the um..flair around it.
The game has some bugs but overall has been worth every penny and second of time put into it. Pretty fun hobby.[:)]

If you are already in the process of DL and installation, I would recommend that you do a second installation, if you have space on your drive. Compared to may other games, Harpoon ANW is relatively small, I think.
The reason for the second installation is to accommodate the Beta Patch 3.7.1; one installation for 3.7.0 and one with the Patch. In this way, you can play MP on the 3.7.0 version while enjoying 3.7.1 in solitaire mode. 3.7.1 has a few bugs fixed, but it causes every MP session to end in a crash-to-the-desktop.
