Custom HUD colors & Icon size

Is it possible to change the layout and the color of the HUD? Id like to some more colors because under some circumstances the exiting colors are not enough.
Another thing are the indicators used for Hull, Shields and so on. In my opinion they are a little bit well not emphasized enough

Once upon a time i saw a mod that changed the compass interface for the helm, but that was as deep as I saw. I'm pretty sure its possible, but i dont know the file-structure, or what the game needs as far as those images. Im not too sure about the damage indicators, Im pretty sure its just a "Make it yellow tinged at 50%" or whatever.

Is there even a way to decmpress the original game data (the shutter.dat file the game directoy)? Would probably violate some agreements...

Yes it would! Milo has specifically asked that folks not crack the dat. This preserves his intellectual property rights. I can ask Damo and Milo how this could be done, but don't hold your breath waiting on an answer. They're a bit swamped right now.
