Screen Resolution

I downloaded the demo and on my first run it said, "Could not set video to requested resolution (1280x1024x32). The game will now terminate."
WTF? 1280x1024? Why, 1) were not system requirements posted anwhere? (I looked) 2) Did the install application not check to see if I could use that resolution? 3) Why is that the *required* resolution when most computers can't display it? Both of my machines max out at 1024x768x32 (my desktop can theoretically support higher resolutions, but on in a "you see 1/4 of the screen" way).
I think the only computers I know of in my vicinity would be the Digital Media labs that are cranked up for photo editing and 3D rendering needs (and have absurdly large monitors--at least 17" compaired to my 13" ones).
Any reason this game which has relatively low system needs (Win98, 700 MHz, 256 ram...) needs an extreamly high graphics resolution?
