Semi OT: Flags of our fathers

Anyone seen this film? Just saw a trailer that said "starts at cinemas across Europe 25 October". Well although Austria is in Europe too, here it starts 19 Jannuary. [8|]
Wonder if it´s worth watching it. The thing that really deterred me was the fact that this guy who acted in Windtalkers is also the leading actor in this film (I HATED WINDTALKERS).
So is this film about the battle on Iwo Jima or is it some kind of romantic love story of some of the guys that survived the fight and doing publicity in the States? Would prefer the kind of film that Saving Private Ryan was even though it was a Spielberg film. Director of Flags of our Fathers is Clint Eastwood what´s not really encouraging to me.[8|]

What? Are you kidding Castor?
That's precisely WHY it can't be a bad movie...
Clint was interesting as an actor - he's just a godsend as a director [&o]
And more than that, you'd better see it simply because in some months, "letters of Iwo Jima", the japanese viewpoint, will hit the theaters too - now THAT'S original...

Hi all,
This movie is #1 in two part epic about Iwo Jima.
The #1 is American view whilst #2 is Japanese view (first to come out was #1 movie with #2 movie due out in 2007).
Both movies are directed by Clint Eastwood which I find rather encouraging since he is very good director (and actor) in my book!
I will try to see both those novies if I can... [:)]

Well, I like him as an actor but until now I wasn´t really happy with him as a director. Though if you ask me fast enough then I can´t tell you 3 films of him as director.

Now that sounds interesting. Both are directed by Eastwood? One produced in the States and one in Japan?

I've read the book - interesting personal level detail of day to day military and civilian life and some very graphic descriptions of the battle. The style is more like a journalist than a historian. Fully half of it is a short bio of the guys in the flag photo, and covers the bond tour after the battle. I'd expect Eastwood to be able to make a very good movie of it.

If Clint Eastwood is the director, I will watch it [8D]
There are two "Eastwoods". The frontier is somewhere after the hilarious Spaghetti Westerns & Dirty Harry: excellent movies if you love (I do) unintended big laughs, just like the cheap & sloppy Hong Kong Kung Fu "movies" from the 70's [:D]

Uunforgiven, Mystic River, Million-Dollar baby to name some of the most famous ones [:)]
These are clearly must-sees!

I wanted to see it last weekend, but it's already out of theaters here in Tampa area. Was playing down in Bradenton, but that's about a 2 hour drive from my home in Land o' Lakes.
Maybe it'll win an Oscar or something, and they're re-release it for a few weeks in the spring (they often do that for the winners).

So was it like some sort of Rambo action in WW2 with fire ball explosions big as houses or was it made at least a bit realistic? If the whole island was taken by those two actors then I won´t going to see it.

If it´s a Science fiction film, yes, if it´s a war movie about something that happened 60 years ago, NO!

Instead of keeping this blasphemic stance and before everybody starts throwing rocks at you [:D], why don't you give the trailers a try, I think it's already worth a look. [:)]
Flags of our fathers (the US side)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=eiOMtdneUVc
Letters from Iwo Jima (the Japanese side)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xCZLkxYZmx0
I think you really should give Clint a chance [;)]
(And actually, there are some "explosions big as a (small) house", but as long as these are 406mm hits, I may tolerate them [:D]

Thanks for the links, I already saw the trailer. That´s why I started this thread. If I only would see the trailer I wouldn´t go watching it.

Well the fact that there is a Japanese part would motivate me enough already to go and watch the US one [;)]

Both by Eastwood.
One in Japan (I think in Japanese language) and one in USA (in English).
Thus you get point of view from both sides... [;)]
