defensive/offensive profiles

if a group is made on offense and the only specified is the run:pass ratio (everything is set on ANY), will that group over-ride a group made specifically for (let's say) 3rd down and long (>10) scenarios?

if you don't put any plays into a group, am i correct, in my understanding, that the computer will select plays from their playbook that are not marked SITUATIONAL?

same goes for defense. if i create a group that is only specified to face (ex) 3rb, 1te, 1wr and everything else is on ANY, will that also over-ride a group that is specific for 3rb, 1te, 1wr on 3rd and long (>10)?

playing the game, sometimes it seems to go both ways.

is there an official answer for this?

I don't know why you would be creating the first scenario, but it would be overridden by the specific one anyway.

You don't need to create a group that has no plays. If you tried, it would simply ignore the group.

The specific group should over ride the All Any group. I can't think of a reason you'd create a situational group that is just 'any' situation, that's the default for the game anyway.

There would be no point in you creating the first scenario, but it would be overridden by the specific one anyway.

there is a point. say i'm playing a power t formation (3rb, 2te). i don't want the defense playing a dime on a power t formation.

using a "general" group against each different formation keeps the defense from calling plays that would never be called in real life.

thus, i figured using a general group would be the logically thing to do, since i didn't want to create 1 million groups for every possible scenario.

good to know. reading the manual is very misleading then. (in reference to the manual stating "if you didn't have any passing plays in the group, the computer would again pick a random play from those available.") in my mind, i figured this would be true all around.
The specific group should over ride the All Any group. There would be no point in having an All Any group.

the only reason you would create a group without plays is to set situational run:pass ratios in hopes that the computer would select from the plays you did not mark as situational. as in 1st and >5 you want to run 75% and pass 25%. (of course, there are situations like 3rd and >15 that you only want certain plays) also, because building groups is time consuming and it seems like an easy fix..

thanks for answering so quickly.

maybe other players have had the same thing going.

I believe it says something along the lines of creating a group that contains all running plays, but you set the play calling weight to 100% pass, it would ignore the group and pick a random play. If it doesn't say that, I'll have to edit the manual because yes, that would be misleading and not what I meant.

At any rate, the general rule of thumb is that if you want to allocate a specific set of plays to be called given a very specific situation, you create one of these groups. I actually never intended the 'Any' option to be the only option used. I'd actually envisioned that at least one specific option for one of the categories be selected. So for example, Any Down, Any Time, etc.. but < 1 yard to go. So there would always be at least one specific option chosen. I may have to modify that dialog so it's not possible to save a group of all "Any's".

Does that make sense?

it does. it would, however, be nice to keep/have the option to make a defensive group of plays that are used "in general" against a certain offensive formation (which i guess you can now), and then be able to really go into detail as needed.

i have 14 defensive groups against each possible offensive formations (8 in total) in each defensive playbook (4-3/3-4), and 21 offensive groups per (what will be) 6 offensive playbooks. as you know, it's a lot of work to make sure the defense is not calling a dime against a flexbone (normal) on 1st and 10, and to make sure the offense isn't calling a shotgun 5 spread on 1st and 10. having a "general" group helps, so you don't have to create even more groups to get the most realistic results.

thank you for you quick response.

i do use the other settings as well.
