Please excuse my ignorance but how do you use the flags in game and how can you tell which ones to use? See below:

Click on a unit and you will see the flag for that unit in the right side of the Info Area. If you click on the flag it will bring up a list of all available flags. Click on the one you want and then click OK at the bottom of that window to switch flags. For the named units you can click on the name in the Info Area to see a brief unit history. That will usually tell you what State the unit is from which can help in picking the right flag.

Its much easier to use the flags from inside the game. Go to "Military" advisor on the lower left of the main screen. On the right side of the units you can click on and select different flags.
Also, by clicking on a military unit on the map, a flag will appear on the lower right of the display and you can also change it from here.

also you can add flags to Generals and Siege guns
if you open a container, ctrl click on the Div, and the click on all the units you want to change to that flag, making sure the last one is a Inf type unit
then click on the flag, pick the one you want, and then afterward click F, when you click somewhere else, all the units that were highlighted with the Ctrl will now have that flag

Quick question:
Once you assign flags to units can you save them to stay that way with a new game or do you have to assign them all over again?

And do flags have any effect on game mechanics, or are they there for historical flavor? Regardless, it's very cool they're in the game.

I am not sure on the saveing, there is something in there for flags, but the last time I messed around with it was early in alpha, and it didn't do anything yet, that I seen
flags are more for flavor I would say, but it does help to tell who is who
I normally try and have a rule, I do not give a Div a Flag, until they EARN it
say, a battle where they outnumbered and stand there ground, or if they do major damage during a battle (or if it is a div I want to know where they are at (my von Dorn Cav)
