More trouble with CVE squadrons

I just received my first CVE with replacement squadrons aboard. Unfortunately I didn't notice its arrival the first day and by the end of the second day the squadrons had bloated to a ridiculous 51 planes each. Now of course the carrier is useless with these current squadrons aboard.
I know that there is now way to fix the squadron sizes, that once they expand I am stuck. I do have a couple of questions though:
1. Do CV/CVE/CVL always arrive with replacements turned on? Sort of problematic with the current bug isn't it?
2. If I unload one or both squadrons will anything dire happen? I seem to recall Don making a post never to do that.
3. What have others done in this instance to make the carriers useful?

Are the squadrons VRs? They are replacements for the allies. They will automatically replace your carrier planes in a replenishment task force. [:)]

Yes, he did say,

They are meant to get that big.

They are, but I currently have over 100 planes on that tiny jeep carrier, pretty much a physical impossibility I think. Will the carrier still fullfill its replenishment role being so over capacity?

Oh yeah. Over capacity only has an influence on flying combat missions.

They are not overloaded. I have not had any problems yet, mine have worked at least in my game vs the AI. Not very far in PBEM to look yet. [:)][8D]

Ok, this is really odd to me. How can a little carrier have over 100 planes on board and have room to launch anything. This was not historically correct was it? How big will the CVE squadrons get?

I can help with that, if you just give me the coordinates [:D]

The Replenishment CVEs (those with VR groups) usually have up to 54 carrier fighters and up to 54 carrier bombers on board (depends on the pool).
Positioned within a Replenishment Task Force within transfer reach of a fighting TF (CV, CVL) they will transfer airplanes to the fighting TF to compensate for losses. This happens automatically, e.g. the player does not have to initiate this.
Beware that there are two other forms of CVEs in the game.
1. CVE Long Island. This CVE has no assigned air groups. She can be used to move air groups (single engine only) around. The air groups to be moved have not necessarily to be of the "carrier qualified" type. The advantage of using Long Island is that the planes aboard are not crated, and can be launched to the place you want them to be from transfer distance.
2. A bunch of CVEs which do not have VR type of air groups aboard. These are "fighting" CVEs, meaning they can be used as "Jeep Carriers". Their air groups will act like air groups on the bigger carriers (CV, CVL).
Cheers
Rainer

Thanks Julier7Bravo and using them in this manner, as a big "18 Wheeler", I get. In fact it is what I use the Long Island for. However, in WitP I believe these CVEs put in a replenishment group will launch replacement AC which will transfer directly to another CV. This can be done mid ocean. Am I incorrect about that? I never tested this part of the game because against the AI I didnt need replenishment CVE.

Hi Niceguy,
You are correct about that. I DO find it a bit random though. For some reason (I have yet to fathom) some of the CVR squadrons fly off planes to CV's where as others are just sitting there...........
I also saw something else cool a few days ago.
I moved back onto a respawned CV it's ORIGINAL squadrons. Except when I moved the SB2C Squadron on board 1 plane was left behind damaged on land = next turn the Squadron on the CV had metamorphosised into a 54 plane squadron (CVR size!). It went back down to 34 when I moved the last damaged plane aboard....interesting.

Hi Speedy,
Yeah, that is strange. The rule I have learned in witp is keep your units together or strange things happen. I can't imagine how hard it must be to code all the possible situations that could come up with unit fragments. But good info to know in case something like that happens to me. Of course, I don't plan on losing any carriers, thus none will need to be respawned. [;)]
Well, I guess situation normal is ok in this circumstance. I'll quit squawking and just use the CVEs as they are meant. Thanks all.

My problem is that, I have 3 VR type CVE's sitting inport PH, with no fighters in the squadrons. They are not receiving replacements. There is plenty of supply and plenty of HQ units in the hex. They have been there for over a month with no movement. I have no clue what is going on.

That's a big part of the reason why I hate VR squadrons, right there... They haven't fragmented on you, have they? Have you checked if there's a big bunch of fighters sitting on some island somewhere, doing nothing?
