The turret is autonomous. You cannot access it as a player. This is not a turret like you would expect on a WWII bomber. If you go to the F3 view, it is the back end of your ship.

In my experience, it usually fires on persuers, although I've heard its capable of firing at missiles.

The way they are coded, they shoot at anything that has an IFF code that is not your own as long as it is within range.

I thought nothing shoots on neutral (white, IFF number 0) targets [&:]

Not true. You can fire the turret yourself. At least I did. Shift-Backspace changes your primary weapon. One of them is the turret. Just press Ctrl to fire as a normal turret - except it fires "backwards" so it's darn tricky to use (but usefull for killing capital ships when all your other weapons are destroyed).

True, you can fire it manually, however as you noted it is very hard to use except perhaps against stationary targets. Also, while you're busy shooting the turret...who's flying your ship!?!?
Matti,
Most things will not shoot at an IFF of zero, but there is also an IFF of 100. It will show up as white or grey as well, and those targets can be engaged. Visually, it can get confusing and make it appear that your turret is engaging "neutrals".

Heh, Well when I first tried this I was up against a frigate and my others weapons were dead. There weren't any other ships around so I could take my time and sit in one place and rotate to point the turret (using F3 view).
Of course the frigate ended up ramming me whilst I was stationary (Accidentally I suspect), but I put lots of volleys into it first.
