Germany Questions

I am a fairly new player to this game and I would like some advice. I enjoy playing Germany and Japan most but I am running into a problem. In Axis and Allies the Allies generally won but occasionaly the Germans could pull out the win and take Russia out. So far in the two PBEM games I have seen it appears that Germany has no chance once Russia is mobilized. I also don't see how attacking Russia is very viable. Can someone give me some pointers? Maybe I am doing something wrong.

Well, I hate to give up the secret here but quite frankly (and I am a decent Russia player) if you really want to take out Russia, do it right after the fall of France (Winter 1940.)  Do not screw around ibn the med, simply redeploy east and there you go (the weak Russian economy simply has not had time to produce anything........)

I think there is a thread about German strategy in the war room subforum - orin 73. You may want to look there. [:)]

There are a lot of good strategies - but if you are playing a human opponent it pays to watch what the Russians are doing the first year or so. If they don't build many units, a 1940 attack could work if you are able to take France in Winter of '40 - as christian notes. But this can be tough. The Russians will get their big militia force and the first winter could be challenging if they have a lot of supply and units to use in a counterrattack. A more traditional strategy would be to build a good tank force and attack in Spring of 1941. Consider having a solid bomber force to hit the Russian infrastructure (factores, resources, and/or rail) - as this will make a big difference over time!

Well I've played a bunch of pbems with friends and ppl on these forums and I don't know about an early attack. The sovitets get that militia bonus that tips the force count a bit in their favor if you go to soon (IMO). I have not tried enough early strikes myself to know for sure tho. It also depends on what people mean. Like Right after the fall of france or like 3 turns etc. Maybe after you take france do a big build surge then go with that. But do you have Romania in the axis at that point for example or do you just shuffle through poland. Also if your invasion stalls you are in for a world of hurt when that russian multiple hits 3. you have to be sure you waltz through or it's going to be a quick game.

I started a thread on this topic and came to the conclusion that a late attack (as late as possible) makes the most sense. However, after playing a few games as allies I dunno. If you do an early build of tanks and army it could work.

If you wait until later though you lose a lot of tools from a prepared campaign like having heavy bombers to take the russian economy down a few pegs. I've seen people just get paralyzed and not rebuild bombed factories until russian production was like 6. You also can't do anything fancy like an attack through Iran against the caucus which forces them to split up their army. I don't know that you give a whole lot up vis a vis a an attack on england either other than you don't have the big air builds that you would have otheriwse early on because they were spent on land units for an early attack on russia.

Well Orin, a spring 41 attack is it...deny Italy's entry, use thier suppy and resources, include air power and go after them...It takes 3 years...Make sure Norway and Yugoslava was secured in 40. Usally a 20 Inf, 10 Arm, 15 Art, 10 Ftr, 5 Tac, 5 Bom, and 5 Subs, with teck up will do the job...Sorry Chris I gave up my ghost...lol

Jon

P.S.

Just keep at it. To new players, it always seems Germany can't beat Russia. Some of your problems may have to do with inefficient use of rail. For two of my friends, having advanced supply turned on makes it too difficult for them. I tried to show them how to beat the AI and that it was possible to overrun Russia, but they were unable to absorb it all in that quick lesson. I figure in time they, as well as you, will manage if you stick to the game.

Play as the Allies in some PBEM games to see how others play the Axis. A new player can quickly be brought up to speed in this way.

Thanks for the help everyone. I finally had a game where I knocked Moscow off. My first victory with the Axis followed. Also managed to take all of China, India and Australia with Japan. Was a great game!
