Comparison to older titles

Hi all,

I only recently saw that Matrix would be re-releasing this series. I had East Front way back when it first came out and like most people, was heavily disappointed in it when it debuted. Since my group was really into TANKS! at the time, I never bothered to keep up with the Campaign Series afterwards (or the patches for EF).

Seeing this re-release, I dug out my old East Front 1 CD and downloaded the last patch (1.08 I believe). The result is actually pretty good. I am enjoying playing around with it, although the interface and whatnot are definately showing their age. The Campaign mode is interesting, but many of the scenarios it generates are questionable (assaulting across a large map with nothing but foot infantry...would be hard to win if all you had to do was MOVE to the objective, let alone fighting on the way in...).

So, my question is how will the re-release compare to what I'm playing in EF1(1.08)? Is there a list somewhere that someone can just point me to that details the scope of this release? Is it really just more of an updating for the new operating system or a substantial revision of the game?

Sorry if this is detailed somewhere already and I didnt find it, but if so, please just nudge me in the right direction.

Thanks!

Try scrolling down the campaigns to the custom ones. They are fun and human designed. Many more from the various expansion CDs available.

for a flavor of the game try finding ef2 or wf, online somewhere. yor ef 1.08 is way outdated and bug riddin to give you any sort of idea of whats to be expected. i still play ef2 to this day , with so ROE set before hand can still be quite fun,

Or Rising Sun Gold, be sure to get the Gold edition.

Or you could wait for Matrix to release their edition of World at War, the compilation of all three games, EF2, WF and RS. That's going to happen soon, right? Right? [:D]

thats been a question forever - On the Talonsoft ladder sites there are still dinosaurs that play only EFI.. its a lot harder to get in some countries.
Comparing anything to the first edition is tough. It had tons of potential but a lot of bumps. Over the years the Blitz wargamers have Id'd most of the bugs and playability issues and initially ( before the horror of Take2 ) Talansoft was pretty responsive and got our patches out. Since thew dark ages of CS gaming began the gaming elite have been quietly biding their time and have learned to make the best of the game thru some very neat campaigns and scenarios - these scenarios were chewed on by everyone and the best stuff came out on top - these are the addons you'll be seeing - rarely in the history of wargaming has a remake gone through the kind of scrutiny that CS has..  This isnt a rush release - It's loyal Fans putting together a solid, well thought out series of changes after years of debate and testing. Dont compare it to EF I =)..

Some of us still like the simplicity of EF I though.

 Good luck with your question
