Quick question on Victory Conditions...

I just picked up Birth of America at a store in Germany. My PC is in for repairs, but I can't wait to try this game out. About time there was a good game on this era.
Question: Does the game automatically end in 1783? Or could the war last...say...until 1785?
Is it "death by calendar"????? I hope not. I hope military-political-economic factors decide when the powers in play decide to throw in the hat. Not the historical outcome, in what for all intents and purposes for the electrons fighting in my computer, is an alternate universe!!! [;)]
