SUB Range BUG (JAP)

In a current game I have captured Johnson Island as the Japanese. I have based sups there and positioned them off the WC.

Problem:
Patrol ranges for these subs dispays between 80 and 90. I have some subs still based at Kwaji in simmilar locations. They display a range of beween 30-40. What gives?

Do the subs say they have Johnston Is as their base? The game has a quirk in that it seems that if enemy LCUs enter a base that supports the subs the subs are automatically rebased (using a formula not entirely clear to me).

I had U.S. subs based out one of the New Guinea ports in a game. The Japanese attacked me there and the subs, when I looked later, were based out of Cooktown.

Could this be what happened to you? If not, then the routes from Johnston to the WCUS might be the problem. I have never sent anything directly between the two so I don't know what path such ships would follow.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

The subs are based at JI. I think the ranges are extreme I do not care what path. I have moved all the sub groups but one back to Kwajalin. This is definately an inoportune time for this.

I have a similar problem with US subs based in Broome/Darwin and Port Blair. Subs from B/D have an extra 54 (or so) added to their patrol range (these are GATOs), even if they are set patrol in the B/D harbor. Subs from Port Blair have ranges of less than 10 between mainland and borneo, and then moving them more south, the range starts to increase from 2.

As an unrelated to the topic issue: Is the Hudson I factory not autoconverting historical? And what about not having a factory for Blenheim IF unless you make one yourself?

I'm pretty sure the game plays with the sub range parameter to represent other problems/limitations, mainly representing the difficulty of operating in an area a long way from your home base, but also the amount of time spent on patrol, and maybe how often its been detected by the enemy. After awhile, the sub becomes so ineffective, represented by its increasing range parameter, that you need to return your sub to its base and redeploy it again.

I remember reading in some part of the manual to select a good port as a sub base. Could that be the problem? Smaller port = longer range?

JI has a port of 4. Should work for sub base short of magor R&R.

Hi, also Midway is a 4 and most cenpac US subs were based out of there historically. I am leaning towards Ed's explanation have they been on station a while?

Also look to see if JI is isolated and perhaps low on fuel. The range addition sounds like enough to get to another base and back. Perhaps the program "shuttles" subs when the home port runs low on fuel (could explain Darwin, too).

Just some guesses until the people who know get around to the pages again.

Mogami,

No I got those ranges on the first turn. This is not PW plaing with the ranges. For some reason PW thinks that it is farther to the WC from JI than KI, shrug!

Seems lots of this thread were lost, anyway here's some more.
It may be that the coastal sub effect has something to with the weird patrol ranges, but even so it is a some sort of overflow. And since I see this effect with GATOs, that isn't solely responsible. While testing, I've seen that patrol range is 0 (zero) at some location other than the original port. This does not happen with all or even most ports, I've seen it with Port Blair, Trincomalee, Broome and Darwin. I've also seen a patrol location where the patrol range rotated each turn 4,81,35,4 etc. Well, I'll just use other ports then...
