The delete zone button (the "-" button) doesn't seem to work.

I have not had a problem with that in any build.
 
Is the zone selected and yellow?

Yes.. this is a known problem. When you click that button the game is deselecting the zone before actioning the deletion. And because the zone is no longer selected, the deletion doesn't take effect.
 
I corrected this and the private testers have it. It's fixed for the next public release.
