in the first mission taking out the mines - each time my wingman gets killed the games crashes to the desktop - is there any way to fix this?

Don't do that mission. Seriously just do a different mission where the ineptness of your wingmen shouldn't be an issue. There are only 3 anti-mine missions at a time if I recall. Take one of the other ones.
