Non-activated LCU's initiate attack

Greetings.

I am playing Guadalcanal as the Allies. I have the 1st Marine Division, 24th Inf Division, 25th Inf Division, and the 31st Inf Division located on Guadalcanal. Readiness is 99 for all units. Guadalcanal is under American control with Japanese units present. During the turn of November 8th 1942 my units initiated an attack even though none of them had been activated. I double checked to make sure the 1st Marine Division was not activated before the turn began. I understand that if they are attacked they will defend themselves without being activated, but I did not think they would initiate an attack. The Battle Report stated that the attack was initiated by my units. Any ideas why this would happen?

AlvinS,

The 1st Marine Division has always been gung-ho since v1.0. I have seen it mentioned in this forum back when Matrix released v2.0, but the code has never been corrected. When I don't want the 1st Marines to fight I deactivate the unit.

I have noticed in my current game, that some Army Divisions at Cape Gloucester have initiated attacks (unactivated, and low readiness)after gaining base control. These units have also been under Asiatic Fleet, Cental Pacific, and South Pacific control.

If I remember from the rulebook correctly, if you don't have base control a units readiness can not exceed "35". Also, with leader initiative the units will fight to gain base control, regardless of readiness if they are near or at full size. This is the way I remember it, I'll try to find the page number in the manual that explains all this.

Hope this helps,

MJ

AlvinS,

Airlift supply to LCU's is on page 48 of the manual, and Amphibious Operations is on page 54.

Here are some other pages in the manual regarding LCU's, and supply to LCU's: 10,15,16,32,34,35,36,46,47,48,52,& 54.

I could not find in the manual, how I stated above that LCU's at enemy occupied bases could not obtain a readiness above "35". I may have seen that bit of information in the "pwhint11" text file.

Regards,

MJ

Thank you

I'll look back through the manual. I had deactivated the 1st Marine Division because I read about that bug in PWHINTS11. I guess they really are gung ho.

I thought the "gung ho" 1st Marine Division thing had been fixed for version 2.3. At least I haven't seen the 1st Marine Division activated without me activating it on purpose in my version 2.3 secure PBEM game.

Units at an uncontrolled base can get readiness up to 99 if they've got a land supply route. If they have to take supply "over the beach" at an uncontrolled base then readiness will only get up to 49 max.

I am running version 2.2, and I have noticed the 1st Marine Division activates without my input. I have to keep a close eye on them. Also if I activate them along with other units, then view them during the next orders phase, they are still activated while the others are not. I have been playing this game for about 4 months now, so I still have much to learn. I appreciate everyones input. The most difficult part of the game is the "just one more turn then I'll go to bed syndrome".

Version 2.3? I didn't know that there was a 2.3.

I was watching my moves last night and un-activated LCU's are definitely initiating attacks under Asiatic Fleet control, if the base is controlled, and the base is set up as the primary target. Go figure, this seems a bit new to me? I think I remember seeing this happen with Central Pacific, and South Pacific Commands also. This may be a U.S. Navy Command glitch.

Hello...

It is possible for a very highly motivated, experienced and well led land based unit to make an attack when it has not been activated. It needs 255 to 1 odds to self activate.

The 1st Marine (Always Ready) Division self activation bug, to which many have referred, is not a bug. The code specifically activates that division at the start of each turn.

Bye...

Mike

Thanks for the info. I had wondered why it would be activated without my input. I specifically deactivated it and insured that the others were also, but still the battle report showed the Allies as initiating combat. So could the 1st Marine Division, or another unit for that matter still reactivate if it achieves the 255 to 1 odds you mentioned?
