Battlecruiser SMS Seydlitz received in the battle of Jutland some 20+ heavy caliber hits (her two after gun turrets burnt out completely) including some 15" ones, plus a torpedo, she shipped more then 5000 tons of water (the whole ship was around 25ktons) and had to be towed home stern first, but she did survive. Interestingly enough it was the second time she received heavy damage, in the battle of Dogger bank one of her after turret's barbette had been penetrated by a heavy shell and the two after turrets were completely wrecked in the resulting fire.

If we just consider WW II then my vote goes to USS Minneapolis, receiving two 24" Long Lance torps in the battle of Tassafaronga, she lost her bow and  most of her boilers. IMHO Franklin's damage was clearly not underwater one, and while fire could be potentially devastating for a CV  fire alone  can hardly sink a ships (as the battle of Midway proved both thesis according to Shattered Sword)

Mikasa Maybe?

Hit around 50 times in RJW(1904-5).

Had the rear magazine blow up causing her to sink(not sure about the extent of damage)(1905)

Refloated and refit, then to run aground(1921).

Damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake(front filled with water)(1923)

Restored Again to be commemorative ship(1926).

Requistitioned by the US after World War 2(all Military Furnishings, etc. removed)(1945)

And then Restored again(1961)

Maybe not the worst of damage but quite a long history of damage.... and she has survived to the present day!

To top it off she was Laid down on Jan 24, 1899 ..... 108 Years ago!

This one made an enormous contribution to the Allied cause by not sinking. The gas that made it to Malta insured very little got to the Afrika Korps.

SS OHIO held up by two destroyers lashed alongside.

Jap CAs can repawn? AFBs will not like this. [:-]

I would vote for the Intrepid. Took a beating to the point of abandon ship being ordered. PA system was out so the order was not relayed to the crew.

SMS Seydlitz as earlier posted! C'mon, this puppy was shattered at Jutland, and almost as badly damaged earlier at Dogger Bank, and on both occasions made it back to port. No arguement in any well informed discussion group. There is simply no equal within the realm of steel warships, amd arguably, any warship.

Kumano deserves a mention, doesn't she?
I believe New Orleans was one of the few ships to survive ramming herself.
I'm pretty sure Bismarck didn't survive, but I can check my sources.

" how gets a ship damaged in an earthquake??"

The Kaga hull was used to create a new carrier after the original battlecruiser hull (sister to the Akagi - Amagi? I forget the name at the moment) was badly damaged in an earthquake that occurred while she (the original choice) was on the ways. This is the reason that the Kaga was significantly slower than the other Japanese CVs, because it was based on a BB hull instead of the BC hull (with corresponding engines and propulsion systems).

The Mikasa smacked into the pier or berth she was tied up at. I imagine that she popped some seams.

It was a VERY BAD earthquake. Over half a million homes destroyed, and 2 million homeless (due to firestorms as well).[X(]

And it was Amagi that was damaged beyond repair, leading to the horrible idea of converting BB Kaga in her place.[:-]
