1.Drove off a Jap sub with a 60mm mortar?
2.Wore a goatee?
3.Never saluted officers under field grade?
4.Gen Vandegrift on the 'Canal called him "The Perfect Marine"?
5.Could display the accuracy of the 60mm and 81mm mortar better than any other Gyrene with only 2 rounds?

Gyrene is nickname for a United States Marine.

I don't know if this has ever been fully explained, but the nearest I can figure is that it's a abbreviation of "GI Marine". US Army soldiers were often called "GIs" (government-issue), so this is to distinguish the Marines from the commonplace dogfaces.

I knew I had seen something on the origins of "Gyrene", but couldn't remember where. I found an entry in one of my old TBS books: "a term of uncertain origins applied to the Royal Marines as early as 1894, and to US Marines by about 1911."

I "googled" the term, and it seems that no one really knows where it originated. However, it was intended to be a derogatory term, but the Marines embraced it. That's no surprise. "Gyrene", like "Leatherneck" and "Devil Dog", have become terms of pride. This sets the Marines apart from the rest of the military establishment, and implies a sense of separateness and eliteness.
