Couldn't help it. You know what movie this pic is from, don't you? One man's vision of "alternative" WWII history. [:D]

And here is its commander ("I was told there was a gasoline station nearby."):

Glad you saw the humor in it, Victor. Actually, I think Shaw's character was named "Hessler".

Shall we sing the "Panzerlied" now? [;)]

Ob's stürmt oder schneit,
Ob die Sonne uns lacht
Der Tag glühend heiß
Oder eiskalt die Nacht
Bestaubt sind die Gesichter
Doch froh ist unser Sinn
Ist unser Sinn
Es braust unser Panzer
Im Sturmwind dahin

Mit donnernden Motoren
Geschwind wie der Blitz
Dem Feinde entgegen
Im Panzer geschützt
Voraus den Kameraden
Im Kampf steh'n wir allein
Steh'n wir allein
So stoßen wir tief
In die feindlichen Reihn

Wenn vor uns ein feindliches
Heer dann erscheint
Wird Vollgas gegeben
Und ran an den Feind!
Was gilt denn unser Leben
Für unsres Reiches Heer?
Ja Reiches Heer?
Für Deutschland zu sterben
Ist uns höchste Ehr.

Mit Sperren und Minen
Hält der Gegner uns auf
Wir lachen darüber
Und fahren nicht drauf
Und droh'n vor uns Geschütze
Versteckt im gelben Sand
Im gelben Sand
Wir suchen uns Wege
Die keiner sonst fand

Und läßt uns im Stich
Einst das treulose Glück
Und kehren wir nicht mehr
Zur Heimat zurück
Trifft uns die Todeskugel
Ruft uns das Schicksal ab
Ja Schicksal ab
Dann wird uns der Panzer
Ein ehernes Grab.

Not sure of the translation, but it's roughly the German version of
"I wanna rock and roll all night, and party every day". [:D]

So what's the movie?

The 1965 version of "Battle of the Bulge" (which I believe was shot in Spain --note the lack of snow).

Glenn,

Yes.  Hessler is correct.  You know, Robert Shaw did a pretty good job in every movie I saw him in (villain in From Russia with Love, shark hunter in Jaws, SS Colonel in Battle of the Bulge).

[As an aside, aren't the Panzerlied and the Horst Wessel songs illegal to be sung in Germany?]

Really? I always start to sob uncontrollably and then my thumb starts to twitch on the remote control. Before I know it I am on Animal planet only to see real Tigers... Really scary what bad warmovies can do with me... [;)]

what movie is it where the Germans are pursuing the Americans. they are closing in, and even though they are very low on fuel the Americans roll barrels on gas or diesel down this hill at the German tanks in a desparate effort to stop them. the scene quickly flips back and forth from some German commander leading his tanks up the hill to kill the Americans to his tracks slipping on burning logs or something. this goes on for several minutes until the tanks finally expolde one by one

Speaking of the battle of the bulge,I started to watch the reenactment documentary on this battle on the military channel. But I stopped in the first few minutes when the narrator made the statement"the effort's of a few heroic soldiers changed the course of the war"are we supposed to believe that the germans could have won the war if they suceeded in this offensive?Any off.that depends on capturing enemy fuel sources to continue is doomed! All the major commanders on the german side knew the "large solution"ie a drive on Antwerp was impossible, the "small solution"an effort to bite off the Aachen salient was on the other hand feasable and with the forces the germans had available could have suceeded. But it was'nt grandiose for Hitler.
