divided units

Does anyone know how join divided units back into one entity? 
just leave them in the same hex together and they will join up. However, if you waited a while, when they join, the numbers will be weird, 255 inf for example. And they won't fight correctly with the proper amount of men. So if you divide, plan on it being mostly permanent.
That's my experience anyway.
