but then again, i've heard this song a long time ago when i saw the best WW II war movie "Das Boot"

The best songs have to be russian marches, and there are tons of them.

There's this Russian government/military website which has archived and made available in MP3 format an incredible amount of WWII Russian soldier & popular patriotic songs - all recorded between 1941 and 1945 - I downloaded them all about a year ago and they are perfect background music for our tabletop battles.

However, I know it's a cliché and politically incorrect, but the best WWII song in my mind is the famous "Panzerlied". I heard it first as a kid in a bombastic Hollywood version in some Bulge movie and it kind of got stuck in my mind [;)] - It helps that you can understand the words too, which is something I can't say for those Russian songs.

Wow! Those are very good. I especially liked the version in German. I was amazed at the photos in the slide show. I would recommend folks check these out.

Anything by Glen Miller, though "song" may not apply, cant remember if he had singers in his bands or not. Civilian or military, he joined the military and created several bands.

"It's A Long Way To Tipperary" is a music hall and marching song written by Jack Judge and Harry Williams (Henry James Williams) in 1912. The well known chorus is:

It's a long way to Tipperary,
It's a long way to go.

Goodbye Piccadilly,
Farewell Leicester Square!

It also mentions that it was very popular during WW1

Yep, Glenn Miller counts! (or any swing band of the era).[8D]

One of my favorites is a jazzy, yet silly, French number called "Boum" sung by Charles Trenet. If you ever saw the WORLD AT WAR episode dealing with the fall of France, this song was used as a backdrop to different artillery pieces being fired.

I like Russian war songs,Po dolinam i vasgorjam(thru wallies and fields)
Especially i like their anthem,i think it is write in 1944 by Alexandrov

While Wiki has a few problems concening accuracy (anyone can post, eh?) it's a good place to start research, LOL!

Im afraid you are wrong old chap, the orignal march had no lyrics at all. Quote from Wikipedia:-

"The "Colonel Bogey March" is one of the most popular marches ever published. It was written in 1914 by Lieutenant F. J. Ricketts (1881-1945), a military bandmaster who was Director of Music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth. Since at that time Service personnel were not encouraged to have professional lives outside the armed forces, Ricketts published "Colonel Bogey" and his other compositions under the pseudonym Kenneth Alford.

Supposedly, the tune was inspired by a military man and golfer who whistled a characteristic two-note phrase (a descending minor third interval) instead of shouting "Fore!". It is this phrase that begins each line of the melody. Bogey is golfing term meaning "one over par".

The sheet music was a million-seller and the march was recorded many times. "Colonel Bogey" is the authorized march of The King's Own Calgary Regiment (RCAC) of the Canadian Forces.

Many humorous or satirical verses have been sung to this tune, most of them vulgar. The best known, which originated in England at the outset of World War II goes by the title "Hitler Has Only Got One Ball". my choice would be Vera Lynn singing "We'll Meet Again", the sentimental song that must have got servicemen more "action" than any other. [:)]
