When I first load the game I see that I can hit esc to exit to dos but when I play a turn and go to the menu screen I no longer have that option. How do I exit the game?

Select 'Quit Battle' from the Utilities Menu to get back out to the title screen, then hit 'Escape' and you'll be out.
